Mail Call

Mar 16, 2009 22:49

Tonight I went home, to pick up some boxes for moving and to see my family for familial love (and free food! bwah hahaha).

Each time I come home, my mom refers me to the generous piles of mail addressed to me.

This mail doesn't come from my diehard fans (of which I have so many, and I love you all!), nor from my most bitter enemies (YA'LL CAN SUCK IT... WHOEVER YOU ARE).

I get mail from the several organizations I've donated some money to, or participated in some sort of political action with.

The majority of these organizations are conservation/environmentally minded. These are groups of the sort who advocate conservation of our wonderful biological resources and of our precious natural resources. These are the last groups of people I would expect to be eager to waste paper in order to inform me that there is a dire need in the world for me to give them more money!

Yet that's exactly what they do! Every month, at least, I get a letter from: Defenders of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, The National Resource Defense Council, the World Wildlife Foundation, and the Sierra Club (both National and Southern Californian). Quarterly, I also get mail from some other organizations such as the California State Parks Foundation (who send me these lovely maps of the parks in California, which I intend to put on my wall once I move).

What I want to tell all these organizations is that, "CONSERVATION STARTS AT THE HOME, IT STARTS IN YOUR OWN (outgoing) MAIL BOX", oh, and another good message would be, "SEND ME A FUCKING EMAIL INSTEAD!". Sure if they send me an email, then I'll just click the little checkbox and press "delete", but the result would be all the same as if they sent me a paper letter, as I can't donate any money at the moment (although I think halfway in the year I'll make another contribution to some choice organizations).

It doesn't matter that these notices are printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink, it's still a waste, and it doesn't legitimize harassing me to renew my membership for 2009 (which they started harassing me about long before the ball dropped in Times Square). It's hypocrisy in my eyes, really.

Unfortunately, I doubt anyone will listen to little old me. So I'll end up donating money/time anyway because I agree with their mission(s), despite that reinforcing their wasteful behavior. Ends justify the means, I guess.

Maybe I can call them and tell them to leave me alone.

BTW:

Other mail I've received: SPCA (both national and LA), I think they sent me mail because I donated 20 bucks once last year to feed a dog and/or cat (and the mail they sent has painfully cute pictures of puppies and kittens, crafty bastards).

Salvation Army, I have no idea how/why they got my information, I loathe those bigots. But they requested money from me none the less, and they sent their request in the form of a holiday card, reading, "Dear Lord, blah blah-blah blah blah-blah-blah". You can be sure I stopped reading after, "Lord". They sent this holiday card to the wrong atheist. >=(

Rails-to-trails, I don't remember ever hearing of this group, but they've contacted me. I guess they found out that my inner child loved trains and they're trying to appeal to him to get my current me's money.
