Title: A Small Experiment: Part I

Warnings: He captures a child to experiment on. Um... yeah.



The round little face contorted, lips quivering, trembling, the eyes wide, the blue depths of them shimmering with tears. "P-please, I jus'... I jus' want my mommy!"
A girl, around four years of age, her name he didn't know, didn't want to know... didn't care to know. Jonathan had wanted to test on a child for a long time, but had never been presented with the opportunity. Today, finally, he had that chance.
Turning away from the little girl, opening his brief-case, he took out his mask, slipping it over his head, feeling himself retreat and the Scarecrow take over.

She had already begun to scream. The minute she saw him, her eyes widened, tears overflowing, her mouth open, howling, a thin, despairing wail.
"Calm down, now. Screaming won't help you. Nothing will."
The toxin, enveloping her tiny angel-face, rushing into her nose and mouth, stinging her eyes. She coughed, spluttered, pudgy hands held out, frantically flapping at the cloud surrounding her.
When she opened her eyes, every nightmare that she had ever had presented itself to her, and at the center of it all was the ringmaster, dancing, laughing, long, bloody teeth curling from the mouth-hole of the mask.

The soft, sharp sound of his briefcase closing. Jonathan closed his eyes, running a hand over it's surface, drawing in a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
She had screamed for a long time, flailing at first, then growing tired. Thrashing limbs reducing to weak kicks reducing to small moans and twitches. Her eyes had fluttered, looking, not seeing, her breathing rapid, then slow, shallow.
And then it had stopped, all of it, the strain of her fear too much for her little body to handle.
It had been among the most fascinating experiences of Jonathan's life.
