You're right that most people should have taken advantage of the transportation to get to the Superdome, but the fact is that the same exact things would have happened. Yes the Superdome has a capacity of something like 72,000 - but that's for maybe a 5-hour sporting event, not for sheltering people. Did they have enough food and water to cover feeding that many people for as long as it would have taken to evacuate everyone from the dome?
Nope. They didn't have enough of it to feed a small fraction of the dome's capacity. Sure, you wouldn't have had to do as many rooftop rescues. But you'd STILL have a majorly bad situation on your hands, and would probably need helicopters still.
It's sad that no one in Washington or even Baton Rouge seemed to care enough about our levee system to bolster it and raise it and spend more money on it. But does this excuse New Orleans for not having a realistic plan for evacuating everyone and/or dealing with the aftermath? I think not.
New Orleans officials as well as LA state officials, instead of giving millions of dollars to the Saints and doing other stupid ass shit with our tax money, should have been protecting and preparing New Orleans for something like this.
Instead, our leaders' lackadaisical attitudes spill over onto those who would help us. We just didn't care - so why should anyone else?
