During prep for Clandestine, Chris brought out a vintage-2002 Spycraft character with a never-used dangling plot hook. "I think it came from trying to justify the codename, or possibly some of the background feats." However it happened, it's received universal "that's cool" when related to my gaming brains trust, and since I felt that way myself, I encouraged him to recycle it.
Michael Bainbridge, codename Legend, is the son of the previous Legend, the department's best agent throughout the 60s, 70s and into the 80s, who had no idea that his father was a spy until his closed-casket funeral.
Essentially, he's James Bond's son.
(Sean Connery Bond, at that.)
This actually fits a recurring gag in the superspy genre (seen almost as often as heroes with the initials JB) for killing off Bond-like figures before introducing the new hero. The inexcusable xXx made a point of putting down a tuxedoed dashing type at a Rammstein gig "because he wasn't down with the kids, yeah!" but introducing a young agent who does things in a new way after the death of a Bond knockoff had previously appeared in Teen Agent - which also had his daughter take up arms against her father's killer, so it was less of a throwaway joke at the expense of the classic franchise that both were ripping off.
Not-quite-Bond-honest Greg Wise was blown up by a goof on the part of Rowan Atkinson's useless hero in Johnny English - and the writers went on to nearly kill the Bond series for real in Die Another Day.
And since 2002 Alex Ryder has appeared, now on film in Stormbreaker, and Legend's basic path is a whole lot like his, just starting at 21 instead of 14. (Ewan McGregor played Ryder's uncle after being approached to play Bond in Casino Royale...)
Anyway, it's a rich vein to mine, and I intend to do so for quite a ways.
"Mister Bainbridge. I knew your father... Only really to play chess with. Unlike my superior at the time - he stole his fiancée and blinded him in one eye..."
