I figured today's occasion was well-worth updating as today is the very
last lecture that I'll be attending as an undergraduate. I'm
actually unusually excited about it too because we're going to be
discussing US foreign policy and the Middle East during the 20th
century. The last half of this history class has been extremely
informative since we've discussed topics and events that weren't
covered in high school history because we "ran out of time." Why
in the world would teachers want to teach kids about drugs, sex, rock
& roll, exaggerated threats starting wars (*ahem Vietnam &
Iraq), nearly impeached presidents, and Ronald Reagan...perhaps one of the
biggest assholes of the 20th century?
Good news folks!! A friend of mine had this story posted on his
AIM away message. For those of you who I know will not click on
the link, the basic rundown is that scientists in Australia have
created 'zombie' dogs by cooling their bodies just before death and
replacing their blood with saline. After hours of being
clinically dead, the blood is then replaced and the dogs are given a
shock to revive them. The scariest part is that it works and
there is no brain damage. They plan on doing this with humans
within the next 10 years. Maybe they can do tests to see what
happens neurologically when someone dies...I think that'd be
interesting...assuming the person would remember his thoughts prior to
being clinically dead after being revived. I'm sure the technique
would be useful for people in grim accidents, but other than that, I
hope this isn't used as another lame attempt at human
immortality...what the hell is wrong with dying?!
