So I've been a lurker for awhile and I'm not very crafty - I'm not creative on my own... so thinking up patterns to sew or knit or anything like that isn't really me. But I did see the dalek cookies people have made or tardis cakes and things. Baking I like doing. So i did find that dalek cookie cutter from england I kept seeing. Found it at a reasonable price on ebay (without the cookie dough that comes with it which everyone says is gross anyway haha. so i did make some cookies finally for a friend who loves doctor who.
under the cut are the photos from baking dalek cookies... (i hope the cut works...if not i'll try to fix once its posted...apologies if it isnt in a cut...)
these pics are my first attempts. I merely used a boxed sugar cookie mix as then I knew it would be decent tasting and since it's meant for cutting cookies out, I knew it would hold up well.
on the cookie sheet, pre-baking...
single view pre-baking (sorry its sideways i cant rotate the photo)
cookies on the cooling rack. some spread as they baked so i call those the fat daleks hehe
a pile of finished daleks :)
here's a closeup of one of the better shaped, finished ones. a little plain but it was my first time and i like to try things kinda basic before i move onto harder/more tedious decorating ideas haha.
=======
next batch i made more recently for another friends bday and his kids bday - who both love doctor who! this time i thought about trying to find those edible metallic pearl balls but needed them quickly and couldnt really find them locally. so i had bought some metallic gold crystalized sugar and decided to use that on them this time. the sugar was expensive because i had found it at williams-sonoma. living in new york city is sometimes hard to find specific baking items or craft items. since we don't have chain places like michael's, rag shop, ac moore, etc. and i did need something within a few days so i opted for the expensive way this one time. (i have since found websites with the pearl balls in different colors for very cheap and will purchase those soon for future uses). it worked for the use i needed... my husband still gets annoyed tho that neither batch had dalek bumps on them haha. the pearls would be good for that use tho...
but here they are anyway...
a pile of shiny daleks hehe
a closeup of one of them...
this is the suagr i used.
the cookie cutter is the black plastic one people have posted about here, that as i mentined usually comes with a bag of cookie mix in england. it worked pretty well. i did have to make sure i dipped it into the flour everytime i went to cut out a cookie because the dough would have been stuck in the mold. but it worked out ok. occassionally despite dipping it in a ton of flour, the dough would get stuck in the eye stalk and eye areas a bit... so i always kept a toothpick around to help dig the dough out if needed hehe.
ok next -- Doctor Who chocolates:
another england doctor who product, was the ice cube tray others have discussed/posted about also. so i found this on ebay as well for fairly cheap. mostly i wanted to use it for making chocolates though. so i did use it once to try it. the trays are a hard plastic so the mold for each doctor who figure (dalek, cyberman, k-9, tardis and the doctor who logo), was very tiny/small. so i sprayed the tray with spray butter first to make sure the chocolate could come out of the mold. the tardis worked really well. and the doctor who logo worked perfectly too. the dalek worked ok but the k-9 kept losing his tail when i took the hardened chocolate out. so i cant really make k-9 in chocolate form. i hadnt tried the cyberman due to the antenna sides - afraid they would break off like k-9's tail. but here are some sample chocolates i made that day. i havent really gone back to make them again. i did buy blue chocolate though so i can make the tardis' in their proper blue color :) so thats the next project if i ever get around to it hehe
so you can see the logo is ok but k-9's lost his tail in both instances... still tasty haha but no tail hehe
tried to upload a photo of my mold after i used it but its not uploading for some reason. and i thought i had more photos of the other characters but i dont... sorry this part ended up being kind of lame haha.
Ok so that's my "crafty" stuff thus far. thanks for looking at them!
