Crocheted Dalek

Jul 23, 2008 20:40

I crocheted a dalek!  I gave it to my boyfriend (now fiance!) for his birthday.

I found the pattern on etsy: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5921493

He turned out to be pretty pudgy, and unfortunately, I couldn't prevent the eyestalk and plunger from drooping.

I think he's *adorable*. If you aren't going to do too much hugging of the dalek, you could put some little hooks of wire into the droopy bits to give them some strength. Make a little crook, and push it in bent part first, and then pull it back out and the hook will catch on the stuffing inside. If there's any wire sticking out you can just clip it off. However, this will make him a bit pointy so you might want to leave it as is.

I used toothpicks in mine to achieve the same effect. He sits on my boyfriend's TV stand so he's not played with a terrible lot. Here's mine!

Very Cute. What you want a mini blue crochet dalek to look menacing?
Straight pins are a crocheted Dalek's fiends, er friends. Seriously, just poke them, sharp end first, into the tip of appropriate appendage and it should stay up better. And the rounded head of the straight pin will be safer than cut wire.

Love the color! He's adorable!

What I've found helps is using a bit of pipe cleaner in the appendages. My first Dalek doesn't have any and thus his eyestalk droops a bit.

Oh, he's adorable! I particularly like the use of beads for his head... things... And the crochet really looks nice after being so used to seeing Daleks of the *knit* variety!

The beads are probably my favorite part. :) Especially because they are adorably lopsided!

He's lovely!

When I knitted my Dalek, I found that the best way to get the appendages reasonably pert was to double the yarn and use a needle several times smaller than the one I used for the body. It probably isn't worth unpicking his appendages, but you could use a smaller hook for the appendages the next time you make one.
