Between my husband, my sister’s in-laws, and me we’ve seen many friends and relatives leave dear CT for the seemingly superior climates down south and out west. Now every e-mail, phone call, and letter (yes we still get actual, handwritten on paper, put a stamp on it letters) has to contain some quip about how much better the weather is where ever they are.
Well, they can suck it.
They can suck it hard.
I like living in an area where the seasons are Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall and not Fire, Flood/Hurricane, Tornado, and Mud. You would think that winter is the season that takes the most abuse from these out-of-staters, but it’s this time of year that most people are so grateful they get to miss. This late winter/early spring “time of muck and brown twigs.” Well, that goes to show that some people have no patience and no imagination. This is a great time of year. The snow is gone and the days change from cool, to warm, and back to cool, to tease us with the idea that something good is coming. Landscapes that were, for a time, spiky and brown, are starting to show blushes of pinks, hints of yellow, and a faint haze of green. The daffodils are starting to dot the sides of the roads and the trees are starting to show the soft edged buds of flowers and leaves.
This is the time when we start to anticipate all the beautiful color that will seemingly explode overnight as a reward for enduring the winter. This is when we start to plan for all the activities we’ll enjoy in the warm spring and hot summer.
So, you got to go swimming last Christmas. That seems to be the “be all / end all” argument. Wasn’t that the same thing you were doing last summer? And spring, and fall? Oh, you get to go to the beach all year. Yeah, watch for the sharks.
So we only get to enjoy our beaches for a few months of summer. The rest of the year we get to enjoy campfires without setting ½ the state on fire and keeping a distance of 50 feet because it’s too damn hot. In fall, while you’re still swimming, we’re hard at work at the “tedious task” of raking leaves. We also get the great joy of jumping into those piles. In winter, yup, you’re still swimming. We have to shovel snow and chip ice. We also get to ski, sled, build snowmen, and launch attacks from snow-forts with an arsenal of snowballs. And hot chocolate never tastes better than when it’s used to warm up noses and fingers. Which brings us back to spring. Have you switched to backstroke yet? And yes, we have a lot of clean up to do. But, it gets us outside and imagining what we’re going to do next. And really, is anything better than the first nights you get to sleep with the windows open again?
If you truly enjoy where you live, than good for you. But why are you trying to put us down to prove it?
You see, we like the variety.
And we like getting it without having to travel for it.
And for the record, we can swim year ‘round.
We’re smart enough to put pools inside of buildings.
