Camping

I've been thinking a lot about the upcoming camping trip. It'll be my first not going with family. Just friends. I think I'll enjoy it more that way. Mostly it's because my family's idea of camping has changed since I was little. We used to rough it. Tents in woods, a hand-dug fire pit, and meals cooked over the open flame. (Though, we were still in an area that had access to showers and actual toilets). Now it's essentially throwing a tent up in someone's back yard. Who needs electric and water hook-ups? The last time we camped, my step-dad brought his camper and brought a TV, Playstation 2, DVDs, video games, a mini fridge.... and a DRYER! A dryer! A portable dryer with which to dry wet towels, and swim suits. That's what the sun is for! I understand that my parents and other relatives are not as young as they used to be. Truly roughing it is just too much of a pain. It's no longer fun, but work.

But I'm 23, and my friends and I want to make this trip special. I know each one of us wants to walk away with something. Some of us just want to unwind, and get away from urban life. Some of us want to bond and become a closer group. And some of us want to have a life-changing, soul-searching experience. I'm one of those people. I want my experience with nature to truly impact me. While I know this may not happen (it's very hard to let go of civilization and just "be"), at least I will have a chance to let go of some stress, and enjoy not being stuck in traffic, the constant buzz of televisions and cell-phones, and maybe even a break from the computer. ;)

Now I just have to make it to the end of July without going nutty with excitement.

*On a side-note, I closed tonight, and couldn't have been happier to punch out. Nothing but idiot customers tonight. And all I kept thinking was "God I wish I were camping!"
