My First Backpack

Dec 25, 2006 04:50

Yes, I stayed up until 4am Christmas Eve to finish this. Yes, I'm comfortable with that.

So when going through a bag of fabrics my gramma gave me I came across a swatch of something I thought was blue. It had been in storage so long the pins in it had rusted and it was measured in Imperial. I opened it to reveal this:

A border print of this gorgeously tacky Spanish galleon!
You can imagine the face I made when I saw it, you may be making it now. I showed it to my roommate who adored it (she's been on a pirate kick lately), and so I decided to use my still-low-level sewing skills to make this:

A pirate backpack! The rest is dark navy canvas. The pirate fabric is lined, I was going to make it into a pocket on the front, but when I held it up (of course after I'd done some sewing) I realized it was going to be very, very big. It's still a big backpack, but I didn't want to sacrifice any of the print. I had to trim it down, and the only way to make that into a pocket again would have been to undo a lot of it, and it's 4:30 in the bloody morning already so I just shortened it. It ended up working out for the best.

I really hope she likes it, I'll try to post a pic of her wearing it. Hope you all had/have a wonderful holiday :)
