Once again the Holiday season is upon us. I am made painfully aware of this fact not by the calender, Christmas decorations, or holiday carols, but by the ever pervasive presence of Chia Pet commercials on. Are Chia pets even availible at any other time of year?! I remain completely unaware of the exestience of this drug store oddity for a good 345 days a year. This leaves me wondering about what Chai Pets and their association with Christmas say about American Culture. If I were a foreigner visiting the States around this time of year, seeing all the commercials for said "pet"... I might think that Americans are really okay with giving gifts for the sake of giving something ANYTHING. (because this is obviously the only reason for the exiestence of the Chai Pet, other than a good prank gift) Truely, who would be happy to recieve such a present; and what does it say about this person if they are glad to have been given a Chai Pet. My opinion would be this; either this person has a great sense of humor and is really awesome, or wow, this person must have been deprieved of ALOT of things growing up, leaving them a desire to fill their life with crappy meaningless trinkets. Now don't get my wrong, I like plants. The Chai Pet, to me, doesn't not equivocate to a plant. (even though it technically is) It is some sort of amalgemation of crappy pottery and salad bar. (which makes me think that Richard Simmons may have invented the Chia Pet.)
As I am typing this the Chai Pet commercial is airing, which means I've got to go to my local drug store and buy one for someone I, a) do not like or, b) think would appreciate a good laugh and prank gift.
