Gettin’ my nerd on

All the stuff I’ve been hearing about San Diego Comic Con was making me excited for GenCon and related geekery, so I’ve been nerding it up a little extra lately. I started reading the Dresden Files books. I’ve finished the first one and started the second. So far I’m not super-wowed, but they’re definitely entertaining enough for me to at least try out the first 3 books (I got the box set with my groceries from AmazonFresh). The plot is pretty good, but the writing style isn’t really winning me over yet, but as I said, I’ll give it a little longer to either improve or for Reader’s Stockholm Syndrome to kick in.

I did finally finish Assassin’s Creed I, and have started Assassin’s Creed II. I really thought the first one was amazing, and the second one is better still. They have such an incredible attention to detail in these games, and in the second one they’ve improved on that with an appreciation for moments. If you haven’t played these games, the premise is that you play a dude in modern-to-near-future times, who is essentially getting hacked. In the fictional science, the memories of your ancestors is encoded in your DNA, and with a special machine, you can live out the events of your ancestor’s lives, which is where the bulk of the game takes place. In the second game, when you first go into the life of the ancestor you’re accessing, you pop in at his birth, and the training for how things map to the buttons begins when it says “to move your feet, press X” and the baby wiggles his little feetsies. Such a clever way to do it, well played Ubisoft. Anyway, I’m totally digging it, and if Paul winds up going down to Olympia this weekend, I know how I’m spending my weekend.

I’ve also been catching up on geek tv. I got current on The Guild, season 3 was totally hilarious. They keep getting better and better. And I went back and watched all the PATV episodes I hadn’t seen originally (I didn’t go back through the entire history when I started watching, so I did now). And tonight we’ve got gaming, I believe we will be playing John’s game Wildlings.

I think I’m also getting nerdier because I actually went to a mall and shopped like a girl last weekend. It’s an act of contrition.
