A Show of Strength by thistlerose (Kirk/McCoy, teen, 8,500 words)
Summary: McCoy is badly injured on an away mission. Who bears responsibility is not at all clear-cut, leading to much miscommunication and internalized guilt.
Notes: This is just some well-written fiction right here -- every word of it, from the title to the gorgeous ending, is layered and carefully chosen. Even as I was swept up in the plot, which involves Jim and Bones dealing with the aftermath of an away mission gone wrong, I was also appreciating the way the story is put together: the way the author slowly spins out the truth of what really happened down on the planet, the way she echoes threads of earlier scenes in later ones. It's beautifully done.
Koru (spiral into you) by janice_lester (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17, 26,000 words)
Summary: Bones has issues. Jim has a plan he might not be able to stick to. Also, there is travel, there is bourbon, and there is a lot of hanging out at Bones's on-campus apartment.
Notes: This fic is an utter pleasure to sink into (I've read it a few times now). It's got many things I love in fic: a character- and relationship-driven plot, porn that's not only hot but that also illuminates what the characters are feeling, and a deep friendshippy love between Bones and Jim. Bones has quite a few issues in this fic, and I love how patient and flexible Jim is with him. I also really liked the way the author wrote Winona and Jocelyn in this -- no demonizing going on. I was left with total hearts in my eyes.
