Nate and Brad talk around each other, with the same trust, as ever, but with wide swaths of things they just don't say. Like all her work, it's lyrical, with clever wit, profound silence, and imagery so vivid you can reach out and touch. This is genderswitch done right.
“I’ve got your girl’s six while you’re gone. Although she probably doesn’t know what that means. Hey, Natalie,” He leans back dramatically, still in Brad’s embrace, until he can catch Nate’s eye, “d’you know what someone’s six is?”
Nate’s got his hands in his pockets and his vaguely sad smile on, although Brad doesn’t know whether it’s because of him or the two-year lie he’s lived. It could be both. “Yes, Ray,” he says, “I know what that is.” He even rolls his eyes for effect. Brad aches for a second, for all the things Nate’s had to give up.
