Fandom Overview: Cabin Pressure

Hullo I'm Kt, and this is the Fandom Overview for BBC's amazing Cabin Pressure!

Cabin Pressure is a situation comedy on BBC Radio 4 "about an airline for whom no job is too small but many, many jobs are too difficult".  Currently there are 3 Series of 6 episodes each with a hopeful 4th planned for next year. There are also rumours of a TV Pilot possibly happening in the future.

Cabin Pressure is written by the fantabulous John Finnnemore of The Now Show fame. As you can tell from his recent publicity photo he has an amazing sense of humour. He's also quite cute.

About:
After divorcing her jerk of a husband, Carolyn walks away with her son, her dignity, and an adging private jet.  Doing what any sane vengeful divorcee would do, Carolyn uses her settlement to set up a charter jet company. My Jet Now! Or MJN Air as it's known in the show. The main Aerofield where MJN is based is fictional Fitton. Nobody's really sure just where Fitton is located other that it's near enough to Brighton to divert.

Each episode has three essential plot lines.

1)  Martin and Douglas play a word game such as Brian's of Britain, Rhyming Journeys, or Simon says that Douglas inevitably wins.

2) Arthur makes Coffee. "Coffee Chaps!"

3) They fly somewhere.

The Crew.
Since this is a radio show we don't actually get to see the actors. (Unless you were lucky enough to go to a recording session that is.) Luckily the BBC has come out with some great publicity photos and there is a massive Art contingent within the fandom.

Captain Martin Crieff: (Benedict Cumberbatch)

(Also played by Tom Goodman-Hill in one episode due to Cumberbatch being ill.)

Martin has wanted to be an Airline Pilot since he was 6. Before that he wanted to be an Aeroplane. Unfortunately for Martin, he kinda sucks at flying. (If I remember correctly he took his CPL 7 times.) He's getting better at it though!

Constantly mistaken for the Steward, Baggage Handler, or First Officer, Martin overcompensates and usually comes across as a bit of a fussy prig. Once you get to know him though you'll discover that he has a cute sense of humour, is adorably insecure, and just needs a good cuddling or two.

In series 3 we find out that Martin was so desperate to become a captain that Carolyn was able to hire him without pay. It is then revealed that he supports himself through work as a "Man with a Van", lives in an attic in student housing, and is estranged from his family.

Unsurprisingly Martin is the fandom's main choice for whump. In Fic you'll find him constantly beaten down then snuggled. There's just something about him that brings out the mothering instinct in everybody.

Martin is often paired with: Douglas, Arthur, Herc, Carolyn, Diego and OFC/OMC

First Officer Douglas Richardson: (Roger Allam)

Described by the BBC as a "Dark-brown voiced old sky god" Douglas possess a smooth, smooth voice. He actually got involved in a Smooth Off with Herc in " Rotterdam". When MJN gets into trouble it's a good bet that Douglas will be able to charm their way out of it.

20 years older than Martin, Douglas used to work for Air England "...before finding himself unexpectedly on the job market after a difference of opinion with Hong Kong customs about whether having seven silk kimonos stitched inside one’s jackets indicated one was a smuggler... or simply a lovable eccentric." In " Helsinki" we discover that he didn't really learn anything from that fiasco other than how to hide it better.

Douglas has 3 ex-wives and a young daughter of which whom we only meet Helena, the most recent of the Mrs. Richardson's.

When Douglas and Martin play word games Douglas will always win. In fact, whenever there is a bet involved Douglas will usually win it.

Douglas is quite often paired with: Martin, Carolyn, or Herc.

CEO of MJN Air Carolyn Knapp-Shappey: (Stephanie Cole)

Carolyn is an ex-stewardess and quite often steps in to fill the gap left by her son. Full of sarcastic wit she puts up with no shenanigans from her pilots. However, to combat the boredom of dealing with the clients she will on occasion join Douglas in tormenting Martin, playing Travelling Lemon, or a word game or two.

In Series 3 she starts a relationship with Herc Shipwright. They quite happily snipe at each other about vegetarianism, opera, and the proper names of dogs.

CAROLYN: I - I didn’t always have an entirely awful time.

HERC: Good. I think. Nor did I.

CAROLYN: Right. Well, we’ll do this again, then?

HERC: Oh, good Lord, no! No, next time - opera!

CAROLYN: No. Absolutely not!

HERC: Yes. Absolutely yes! I endured your ridiculous dog and the gruesome sight of you inhaling a shoal of fish. Now it’s your turn to endure some of the most sublime music ever created by Man.

CAROLYN: I won’t like it!

HERC: I’m not remotely interested in whether you’ll like it. Also, you will like it.

CAROLYN: Well, I’ll let you know.
                                                             -Ottery St Mary

Carolyn is often paired with: Herc, Martin, Douglas, OMC.

Steward Arthur Shappy: (John Finnemore)

Arthur is 29, still lives at home with Carolyn, and is an idiot. And I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Arthur is also quite possibly the nicest, happiest, most brilliant guy around. He's like a duck. What ever comes his way rolls right off his back like water.

He's known best for his Surprising Rice!, Fizzy Yogourt, saying Brilliant! about everything and anything, his harem of girlfriends who's names sound like a pony club, and simple yet profound life truths.

In Fic Arthur is paired with everybody and everything. He's also quite surprisingly active in the BDSM scene, pony-play, and sometime Dark!Arthur comes out to play.

Bit Parts:

Carl ATC: (Ewen MacIntosh)

Carl is the non-conformist ATC at Fitton Aerofield who is well known for saying things like: "Don't fly into anything I wouldn't fly into!"

Captain Herc Shipwight: (Anthony Head)

Herc is a Captain with Air Caledonia, the fictional Scottish Airline.  Mostly he's notable for "Out Smoothing" Douglas and dating Carolyn. He's also got a voice like melted dark chocolate.

Diego: (Javier Marzan)

Diego only showed up for about 3 minutes in one episode ( Johannesburg) but he captured the hearts of fans everywhere. He is paired with Martin for adorably sweet long distance relationships. Anything with these two is just pure sugar.

Gordon Shappey: (Timothy West)

Carolyn's bastard of an ex-husband. You just want to reach through the radio and slap him silly in St. Petersburg. A jerk through and through. The actor's apparently a really nice guy though.

Cabin Pressure is a micro fandom at the moment but you can find us on LiveJournal at cabin_pressure  for fic, art, info about the actors, and upcoming events.
