Why this must be read: S9 fic is fairly scarce, for obvious reasons. Suture, however, knocked one out of the park with Vehicle and Tenor. Instead of focusing on what Scully's experience of S9 was, she turned her pen on Mulder, who according to Suture was in hiding with Gibson Praise. And after reading this fic it's almost become canon for me that he was indeed. The way Gibson is written is wonderful; his perception of Mulder - and of Scully and William through Mulder - is heartbreaking and fascinating. However, Suture doesn't just use Gibson to tell Mulder's story - she makes the fic an ode to Gibson, too. She gives his character complexity and sensitivity and a wisdom beyond his years - gives the character a life of his own; an awkward and difficult life - and she lets us see, through Gibson, the bigger human picture: the kind of unfairness The X-Files was built on - the way innocent people were drawn inexorably into the fray, and the price they inevitably paid for their part in things.
