I Should Be Extremely Happy In Your Company by eugenetapdance (Unrated; adult)

I hope you've found something to enjoy among the recs I've posted this month, and I'd like to finish off with what is just one of the most stunning pieces of fiction, pro or fanfic, I've ever come across. It might be an obvious choice, but that's for very good reason. I hope you enjoy it, and please don't forget to let the author know, if so. :)

Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: HJ/Adrian, HJ/Nelson, Silhouette/Nurse
Length: Multi-chapter
Author on LJ: eugenetapdance
Author Website: Author's fic on LJ
Why this must be read: First off, a short warning. Although this fic is unrated, it is most definitely Serious Business and contains scenes some readers might find upsetting. It's whorefic, and not the Pretty Woman variety, there's attempted rape and BDSM that doesn't appear particularly safe or sane, alongside unflinching portrayals of hypocrisy, homophobia and some pretty unhealthy relationships.

That said, in many ways it really is a joy to read. The personalities of the Minutemen are vivid, and the teenage versions of Dan and Adrian who end up being drawn into their circle will break your heart. Alongside its sharp and intelligent depictions of the interpersonal politics of the group, the historical period and the way it impacts on the characters lives is ever-present -- but never in such a way that it becomes overbearing. There are little moments of sweetness and beauty among the darkness, and Eugene's writing style is so elegant that in places it literally takes my breath away.

HJ went alone to check the joint, and there was the kid. Blond as a streetlight with the dark sea behind his head. He wore a loose lavender shirt, looser than the other boys', and he wore it like a challenge, as if to say, "You see? I won't show off my wares to these old farts the way you low class hustlers have to. They know that what I have to offer is more than you'll ever give." The shirt was tucked into artfully tight pants. The boy swayed against the wall, inviting.

HJ offered him a cigarette. The boy flicked his eyes up and down the older man and said, "No" in a voice that added implicitly, "Get to the point, you lech."

"How much?" HJ asked. Honesty was a thing he could rarely offer. He relished the opportunity.
