Why this must be read: Structurally, Red is an oddity. My understanding is that it began as a collection of vignettes and short stories written to prompts from the un_love_you community. The author eventually organized the bits into a single, long story, discarding those which wouldn't fit, and adding some bridge pieces.
Red is one of the least romantic slash novels I've ever read, and yet one of the most passionate and convincingly characterized. Matt and Peter fall into a sexual relationship out of loneliness and desperation. They are both uncomfortable with what they're doing, yet both want badly to continue. The relationship develops and becomes more affectionate, but never quite loses that edge of 'what the hell are we doing?' even as they become a couple, both privately and publicly.
