Why this must be read:
Because it gives happiness to characters who don't get nearly enough of it. And it's happiness that is both genuine and believable. Terazumi and Kagan Kuroshungei (Terazuma's shikigami) are wonderfully written, of course, but it's Wakaba who steals the show. She knows what she wants, and she's not going to stop until she gets it.
"Mmm," he said, eyes half-closing, ears tilting back, even Tsuzuki forgotten. For that idiot she made sickeningly sweet cakes and cookies, so rich a normal person reached overload at the fourth bite. He got fresh croissants, crisp and flaky, with a layer of bitingly bitter dark chocolate baked inside. She really did know him too well.
He would have liked to ask her out to lunch to show his appreciation, but he knew how that would go. Kagan Kuroshungei would be insufferable about the whole thing, and all it would take was a simple brush of fingers while reaching for the salt to get them banned from another café; even in Meifu, restaurateurs had their limits. He wanted to, though, and he had to drop his eyes to his report again so his frustration wouldn't show.
He half expected another growl for that--mocking, superior--but what he got was a very faint whine until he took another bite of croissant. Which made the stupid shiki purr.
