This is my last rec for this small fandom, and I hope that you have enjoyed all the recs I have made this month. Saved one of the best for last.
With a wish, Harry finds himself in an alternate universe where he never had any magical powers. He very much has a life he wants: his father is alive, he has a successful career, his relationship with Murphy can be more than in the world where he is a wizard. But despite the good things in his life, he becomes aware of the ways in which these things come at a cost.
I love that the new world Harry finds himself in is a good place for him, but that there is something fishy going on that makes it wrong for him to stay there. As ever, this author nails the canon character voices and creates fascinating original characters. It's a beautiful and emotionally complex story with magic and mystery, which are the things I love about the Dresden Files.
The ghost tilted his head back slightly, studying the wizard for a moment. Soon, recognition did filter onto the pale face, though not the right kind. “You are Justin Morningway’s nephew,” he stated.
“That’s right,” Harry nodded, taking anything he could get.
The ghost smirked. “The last of the Morningways. He had hoped you’d be his successor,” he said. “I’d never seen a man so disappointed when he saw you had no magic in you. Elena Ellery must rejoice at your existence.” The spirit turned to focus back on his floating sigils. “The magic of the Morningway line dies by genetic chance. Very tragic,” he said, sounding almost bored.
“It’s not dead,” Harry stated. “Not in my world. The right one.”
