The hazy blue lights shone down on the swarm of musumeyaku, who were dancing gracefully in unison to the slow rhythm of the orchestra.
A powerful voice pierced the air, complimenting their dance, which had come gracefully to a halt. The voice of one Ayabuki Mao. She matched the musumeyaku, donning a royal blue suit and long white shirt.
She looked to her right, eyes fixed on Mizu, who had just entered the stage, looking dashing in a brown tuxedo, her hair fixed in the standard "western" style that all otokoyaku adopted.
Then the beat changed, quickening and changing into a latin rhythm, the pace of the drums and the strings seeming to mirror Yumiko's quickening heartbeat as her Top Star moved closer.
She hoped the hazy blue spotlights would mask the blush that threatened to appear on her face.
Mizu started to dance, her movements matching the beat perfectly, and the musumeyaku mimicked her dance. Yumiko smiled widely and moved to her friend's side, their movements exact and precise. She seemed to get carried away, and so did Mizu. They danced and spun and swayed to the music, and Yumiko turned to her.
She fixed her eyes on hers again, moving towards her in a seductive dance. Mizu's eyes were fixed on Yumiko's too, and she mimicked her nibante's movements, backing away teasingly, causing her to blush.
Chika-san, stop looking at me that way... I know you don't mean it...
Then suddenly Yumiko's arms were wrapped around her waist, moving closer and bending one knee so she was no longer in her field of vision.
Mizu closed her eyes and raised her head a little, as if she was in a state of ecstasy, and as Yumiko let go she lowered her arms, her long slender fingers brushing her nibante's cheeks as she leant in for a split second, a little too close. To Yumiko, however, it seemed like an eternity. She tried to contain the blush that was rapidly blooming on her face, and hoped to God that Mizu couldn't feel how hard her heart was pounding. And at the same time it was breaking because she never thought Mizu would reciprocate her feelings.
Mizu's heart was beating just as hard, and as she pulled away quickly and spun away from Yumiko, she felt slightly disappointed. They continued to dance, each step and twirl complimenting the beat. She faced her nibante again, who was now at the far end of the stage. She then remembered that the musumeyaku were still dancing behind them; for a moment it seemed like they were the only ones there.
She wished there were more opportunities for her to dance with her nibante... it seemed more special and meaningful than when she danced with Tonami. There was a spark, a connection between them that wasn't as strong as hers and Tonami's, and her heart didn't flutter when anyone else smiled at her. Just Yumiko.
Yumiko's eyes were gazing into hers, and she teasingly reached out her arms towards Mizu, swaying her hips a little as she sauntered backwards, and once again, they where both side by side, dancing with as much energy as they could, the musumeyaku mimicking their dance just as before.
And then the Top Star spun across the stage and ended up directly behind Yumiko, who let out a tiny unnoticed gasp as she grabbed her by the waist, their hips swaying as they moved side to side to the beat.
And that's when their dance ended.
It's over already...
Mizu let go, and and suddenly Yumiko was surrounded by the countless musumeyaku, blending in with the colour of their gowns. She watched the object of her desire move back to the front of the stage, and trying to mask her frustration and the tears that were welling in her eyes, flashed her adorable smile and left the stage. She was jealous. Jealous of Tonami, jealous of everyone who got to be so close to Mizu on stage. She was happy that she got to share a dance with her dear friend for a moment, but when the dance was over, she felt like she was being pushed aside, unwanted.
I'm being silly... this is just a performance... I'm just tired, that's all...
Kimu passed her in the wings, as it was her turn to perform with Mizu next, but Yumiko tried not to notice.
What she would give to be in Kimu's shoes at that moment. She would just have to get through the rest of the performance and go home to rest.
After the show, Yumiko had just finished changing and had locked the door to her dressing room, when she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was Mizu.
"Are you okay? You seemed tense after our dance." she asked softly, concerned.
"Y-Yes, I'm fine... Just tired."
Mizu caught her completely off-guard and pulled her into a hug. Luckily, they were the only ones left backstage. Yumiko hesitated and then clutched her jacket tightly, scared that her friend would leave at any moment.
"Chika?"
Yumiko looked into Mizu's eyes and saw a look she hadn't seen before. A look of need. The Top Star leant in a little, less nervous as she watched Yumiko's eyes slip closed in anticipation.
The nibante's heart felt like it had exploded as she felt Mizu's lips press against hers softly, and Mizu was relieved when Yumiko reacted, her hand settling on Mizu's shoulder as she kissed her back.
Then they parted.
"Just so you know... I'd rather dance with you than anyone else." she smiled, adding a cheesy wink.
Yumiko laughed, her previous thoughts all forgotten.
This was turning out to be a good day after all.
