Alrighty. Wick sent me here too. Let me take a crack at this.

If you still want a color for bilbo perhaps green would suit him, to represent the Shire and also because there are those who think the Hobbits were created by the Vala Yavanna - who looks after the trees and other growing things in Middle-earth. She did create the Ents after all

So for Gandalf, he's got quite a few names.
Gandalf - Elf of the wand
Mithrandir - Grey Pilgrim/wanderer
Tharkun - which I think might be Khuzdul for magician? Wise/old man? Not sure.
Olorin - can't for the life of me remember.

(Typing this entry from work on my phone so I don't have all my resources with me)

Now for Bilbo. The name "Bilbo" itself was supposed to mean something to Tolkien, just like Gandalf, but if we want something to describe him for each of the Free Peoples, then one way to get a name is by his description or what he does or his color. It's a but hard to have him with no color because that's how Saruman went bad. He renounced himself as Saruman the White to take on Saruman of Many Colors, which is akin to having no color at all. So IMO it might be better for Bilbo to have a color. The istari are in fact lesser angelic beings known as Maiar who are servants to the higher Archangel-type Valar.

There's no reason Maia/Istari Bilbo cannot be affiliated to Yavanna and take on the Green color.

So the key words you want to have identified with Bilbo are: hidden, watcher and rebirth/renew

Sindarin has the following words:
Hidden or Secret as an adjective: thurin or hall
Guard/watch: tir- or tirith; tirn or tira-
Protect: beria
Renewal: cîl
Green: calen
Green Elf: laegel

So if you want "watcher that hides" you could use: tirnihall
Reborn Watcher could be something like: Tircîl or Tiracîl

I'll post again for Khuzdul in a bit. My break is over. Hope this helps meanwhile.

Hi! Thank you too for coming over to help me out! It's very much appreciated, even more so if you sacrificed your hard earned break from work for this °_0

The thing about Bilbo having a color - and you've got a point with Saruman, I didn't think of that because I only know AUJ, and nothing else from Tolkien ^_^" - is that he goes through a regeneration cycle. As such, he is not always a Hobbit... And not to diss Dwarves or Men, but they don't have a very strong bond to nature/Yavanna, do they? Which is why I wanted Bilbo to be truly neutral... In that way, it's a pity that gray is already in use for Gandalf...

And Bilbo himself is not after power or trying to break ties or anything. He is simply more preoccupied with the microcosm he belongs to in each life, instead of focused on the greater good, like Gandalf... Him being neutral wouldn't mean he is in danger to go dark side... Hm...

Anyway - Tharkun is indeed Khuzdul and means "staff-man" or "gray-man", according to Tolkien Gateway :) And since I was just there - Olorin means "dream/vision of mind."

It did help a great degree! Meanwhile, I was out searching too, and I found a little list of my own (but it's 'only' Sindarin, especially Khuzdul has me totally stumped):

Belegur - Great Heart
Thangur - True Heart

- those two don't really pick up the themes I was thinking of, but they fit Bilbo, character-wise, very well...

Arrad - without a path
Haeron - far, remote, distant
Erist - lone lore

- seems 'neutral' enough, and in a way, being constantly reborn like that, he's 'all over the place' if that makes sense...

Thurin - hidden, secret

Uhm, any thoughts? Sorry for this rambling reply ^_^" And thank you for coming back with Khuzdul help, too! :)
