Summary: A letter from Vlad turns into a discussion about fairy tales.
“’Princesses don’t marry kitchen boys, my dear boy, instead, they elope with them?’” Anya reads over Dimitri’s shoulder, amused. She looks even more amused when Dimitri yelps and nearly falls out of his chair in front of the desk. “Careful,” she chides, although she supposes she doesn’t sound too sympathetic when she’s laughing at him.
“Thanks,” Dimitri says, wryly, using his hand on the desk to steady himself. He sighs, and looks a bit sheepish. “You weren’t supposed to read that.”
“A bit too late for that.” Anya wrinkles her nose and takes a seat on the bed, kicking off her heels and taking her hair down from its elaborate bun. “It’s funny how things work out, isn’t it?” she asks.
Dimitri frowns and stuffs Vlad’s letter into his pocket to finish reading later. He joins Anya on the bed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Anya clarifies, “in fairy tales, it’s always the poor servant girl who gets to marry the rich king or prince.” Giving Dimitri a significant look, she smiles. “Why can’t it be the other way around?”
Dimitri says, “I haven’t thought of it that way.”
“Well,” Anya replies, placing a hand on Dimitri’s shoulder and leaning forward to kiss him, “Now you have.”
