A hiker's body is found mauled in the Oregon woods. While investigating, Sam and Dean stumble onto an itinerant sideshow, whose members are the primary target of the same creature killing across the American west. The case alone would be difficult enough, even if Sam and Dean didn't have to deal with the strained consequences of a trip to Hell and back.
This is just beautifully written: sparse, evocative and emotional. Dean's slow recovery is really believable and the bad guy is creepy as hell.

This is guaranteed to give you shivers. It's enormously evocative, and packs a terrific emotional punch in a relatively short number of words. It's just an astonishingly craft-full piece of writing.

Jensen's kind of clueless.
There is something about this story that just utterly convinces me of its reality. The characters are really well drawn, and absolutely recognizable. There are more than a few of those moments when you get heart-slammed by how much the emotion rings true.
