Let me just preface this by saying that I don’t know which band should have won. Let me also preface this by saying I have at least one acquaintance in four out the six total bands and have no gripes with them personally to bias my opinion of them outside of rockband.
There were good things about each band.
The jock/stoner boys whom opened first were simply inexperienced and let’s face it, still in high school. If was still in high school and performing in front of a crowd I would have been crying backstage.
I’m going to call the somewhat undressed band, the Abercrombie group, due to their somewhat emaciated, “too cool for school”/ “just came from sex” appearance. They were pretty good and must be in a garage band or at least have standing and pouting experience, but the lead singer fucking blew it on the last song.
Those two groups made it pretty easy on their competition.
The Recession I was pleased to say was much improved from their last performance on TV. They were much more animated, threw in a costume change and rocked pretty hard. Sean was totally rocking that red light and Renee helped with that sign, Zac is always pretty fun to watch and Dawn Kicked it up, they were all really good.
But apparently not good enough…
For Something Dan’s Manly Band. Now, this was the band that I had qualms with. Kyle is the only one I knew from this band. He has a great voice, a great voice that never once quit on him throughout, that’s what years of projecting at Rocky Horror will do to you. And now that we’re on the subject of Rocky Horror, I must say that at least four people I can think of where in it and it gave them a definite advantage. Stage skill goes a long way in a rockband competition and those who had experience with this knew how to project, move their body, not block people and generally stay calm under pressure. But that’s a side note. Back to the Dan Band. The girl guitarist who was not in the other band and again, I’ll address this in a minute, rocked. She had a lot of energy and moved around and was just giving it her all. The drummer was good but I didn’t really notice him and there was the dueling guitarist from Schnauzerrocket…what the fuck? Okay, so it seems Dan, was too cool for the band, a guitarist didn’t show. Now, people can have alternatives, understudies and so on, but to grab an opponent’s player is a conflict of interest and frankly, should have been against the rules. She totally rocked, and no one is saying otherwise but, dude, she wasn’t a member of their band. There was also the failing out of one song and nearly doing so on another song, how does that work? I was told they would have to forfeit their points, at this stage how could this band possibly scrape a win? That’s what I don’t get, a third place, sure but a win, no, I’m not a judge but I completely disagree.
Onto Collector’s Addition, Caleb’s band was pretty fucking cool. Their drummer was awesome, Caleb managed to get the hottest guitar and base players I think I’ve seen, and Caleb did a great job on vocals. The band had a cohesive, rockin look, complete with a fan club, and stage presence. I was stunned when they only came in third. Ouch. Frankly I couldn’t decide between Collector’s Addition and Schauzerrocket.
Now, speaking of which, Schauzerrocket outdid themselves from their last appearance on TV. They lost the costume change but made up for it in stage presence, energy and let’s face it, BALLS! Nick’s voice seemed to betray him (as it did to many) as the night got later, but it didn’t seem to affect him in the least. Liz rocked the drums and Jimmy as per usual was doing tricks and being awesome. The girl who was in two bands, I don’t know her name but I would have died if I were her, not only did she play twice as much as everyone else, but she did so first in plastic and then in leather; as a well seasoned pleather wearer, I can say with no uncertainty that that attire is both exhausting and dangerous. She fucking rocked and should have gottan some kind of special award or something.
I look forward to next year when I front the all girl group, name to be decided.
