Summary: Ianto takes a phone call for Jack
"Ianto, get in here now!"
Ianto turned around and sprinted for Jack's office. What on -- or off -- Earth was the matter this time?
He found Jack holding up his cell-phone and glaring. Jack thrust the phone out to Ianto. "Here, you explain it. You're a Brit, maybe he'll listen to you."
Ianto took it. "Who's on the phone, sir?"
"The Prime Minister is coming on. He's giving Torchwood information to the Opposition again. Loyal or not, those briefings are strictly 'need to know'."
Ianto gaped at Jack. "Captain, I'm just the receptionist! I can't talk to the Prime Minister!"
"You're Torchwood. That's all he needs to know." Ianto continued to gape at Jack. "Just pretend it's Owen."
The phone beeped. Ianto automatically raised the phone to his ear and deactivated the 'mute' button. After the fall of Torchwood 1, Torchwood 3 had taken over many of their collating duties as the largest branch still standing. Jack had foisted off as much of the paperwork on Tosh and Ianto as he dared, but he had handled the high-end contacts himself before now. "Yes?"
Gwen walked into the office. Jack made sushing motions with his hands. She stared at them, puzzled.
"This is -- Mr. Jones with Torchwood. Captain Harkness asked me to speak to you, sir. It's about those briefings."
"Yes, Mr. Prime Minister." Gwen's mouth dropped and her eyes grew wide as saucers. She pointed to Ianto and stared at Jack. Jack grinned and nodded, putting his finger to his lips.
"Yes sir, we appreciate your Government's need to maintain close working relationships with the Other Side. Please keep in mind that Torchwood is bending its own rules by sending a copy of the weekly report directly to your office in the first place. If we were to go with a strict interpretation of the law sir, I'm afraid you would stop hearing from us altogether."
"Yes sir, I think we all agree that would be unfortunate. Perhaps an accomodation could be reached? I believe you'll find we've already placed a quite reasonable one on the table."
"Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister. We appreciate the opportunity to work with your office on this matter."
"Good day, sir."
Ianto switched off the cell-phone and sank into the nearest chair, staring at the phone the whole time. Jack laughed. Gwen cheered and hugged Ianto.
"Good job, Ianto. I'll have to get you on the phone more often."
"Thank you, sir, but I would rather stick to making coffee."
"Really?" Jack cocked an eyebrow and grinned. Ianto fled the office.
Ianto had an excellent poker face. Only someone who knew him very long and very well would have realized that he smirked for the rest of the day.
