I love when Torchwood treats the Doctor as OMG! Danger! Because on one hand, he helps humanity, and on the other he's committed genocide how many times?

But the bit I want to point out is here:

"The Doctor. He's an alien. More dangerous than a Cyberman. More. That's the absolute last thing we need you read about him in the orientation material?"

I think there needs to be something between need and you. Perhaps "last thing we need. Didn't you read about him..."?

And the "more dangerous than a Cyberman. More." might need a... there's a fancy name for these, but a word to emphasize the second more like "a lot more."

Yep. The Doctor is the 300-pound gorilla as far as they're concerned.

Eeek! I lost part of that when I cut-and-pasted it to the second entry. Thanks for pointing it out. It's fixed now.

Um, to my knowledge, the Doctor *refused* to commit genocide on several occasions, even though it was the easy option. In fact, I can't really remember a time the Doctor did commit genocide (apart from this Christmas Special just gone and to be fair, he did give the Queen every chance).

I get a little tired of the way RTD and his bunch are rewriting the Doctor and making him the harbinger of death and destruction. He's the one who's *saving* lives, not the one taking them unless he's given no other option.

Torchwood was founded by a dotty old woman who had the misfortune to run across a Doctor under the influence of Rose Tyler. The fact that they're dumb enough to stick to her edicts despite all evidence to the contrary proves that they have an agenda of their own that has nothing to do with pure-hearted defence of Earth.

But yes, the Doctor is a lot more dangerous to them than a thousand Cybermen. The Doctor hates tyrants and murderers...

The Doctor has committed genocide before early in the series, its simply that the term "genocide" wasn't used. There's been at least one occassion where he used a missle or bomb to wipe out an invading army's home planet. That's genocide.

You have to remember that the Bad Guys have just as much right to tell legends about the Doctor as anyone else. So do the unfortunates who get too close to an invasion. Since the Doctor never sticks around long enough to do damage control, he can expect his image to suffer as a result.

Shouldn't there be one recorded Doctor sighting in Cardiff -- or did Jack cover it up -- after all, the Rift opening, the Mayor disappearing, someone should have noticed. There would a perfectly good description of Nine available from the Mayor's secretary, and they went to 2 different busy restaurants.

I ask because I'm wrestling with this in a fic of my own -- if post-POTW Jack has been in England for decades then why wouldn't he try to contact the Doctor?

It's the problem with time travel -- he has to not only find "the right kind of Doctor" but "the right kind of Doctor at the right time".

couple of typos -- larking needs an -i-; most Doctor sightings needs an -s at the end.

So, no one but Jack knows about the recent previous visit to Cardiff?

As good as Jack is at forging other peoples' records, imagine what he can do with his own. He probably had the whole team 100 miles north of Cardiff that week.

except of course then they look bad because as soon as they leave town the Rift starts to crack open, the nuclear power plant nearly crashes and the Mayor is kidnapped by some Northerner in an old leather jacket LOL.

Only the first one is an obvious Torchwood matter. Still, I imagine there was a mess waiting for them back home.

"He has a history of picking up pretty girls and taking them with him. But why would he want Jack?"

Three disbelieving stares met his gaze.

"Right. Stupid question."

I'm still giggling as I'm typing this. Wonderful, wonderful exchange.

Thank you. No more Rhys in this story, but I've got 4 Rhys story openers on the back burner.
