The installers came yesterday and put in the laminate flooring. We opted to do the foyer and the main staircase at the same time as the carpet on the stairs wasn't holding up well under the traffic and the ceramic faux "travertine marble" tile in the foyer just didn't excite us that much. Now to see how much the insurance will provide.
I did my preparation for Discipleship class last night and was thinking over the past 6 years.
Six years ago I was still married but in the process of divorce. It was a heart- and gut-wrenching time for all concerned.
Five years ago I was living in Aberdeen, taking morning runs down to the beach and enjoying living in Scotland.
Four years ago I was living in London, preparing to move back to the US. I'd just attended my 30th HS reunion and had used the "L" word with someone. Frightening stuff. I was looking forward to spending the run-up to Christmas with two of my sons and future daughter-in-law in London.
Three years ago I was preparing to head off to my sister's in South Dakota for Thanksgiving where I would have the last holiday with my youngest sister. We had no idea that she would pass suddenly the following summer. A and I were preparing to take the step of having him move in (I owned a townhome in west Houston) which he did after I got back from South Dakota. We had the kids for Christmas that year and it was lovely.
Two years ago, we were mourning my sister's passing and becoming increasingly frustrated with the traffic and expense of living out on the west side. We started the process of preparing the house for sale. A went with me to South Dakota to my sister's for Thanksgiving. We had a great time and felt welcomed. A's oldest son came to live with us just after Christmas to finish out his senior year.
One year ago, we'd just moved into our home in the West End (not to be confused with the west side). The West End is inside the loop, 5 minutes from downtown. It's the west end of Washington Street which used to be the main thoroughfare out of town towards Austin. It's historical (or hysterical, take your pick). We were getting to know our neighbors and enjoying our new home. A's oldest son went into the Air Force. We rejoiced.
Now, we're slowly making progress on painting and decorating. We've had A's daughter for a bit during Hurricane Ike when she and her mother had a falling out. Might be a repeat of what happened with the son but we'll cross the bridges when we come to them. Life is fairly routine and I'm losing weight slowly and surely since being on the South Beach diet since early September. The holidays are going to be quiet this year, no travel planned though I will be going to the GCN conference in Anaheim in early January. I'm looking forward to that.
