Glancing over Ernie Macmillan fidgeting nervously on the stage in front of her, Olive decided that attending the St Mungo’s benefit auction had been the best idea ever, far more fun than thinking up new ways to tease Myrtle about her ghastly glasses or the terrible way she did her hair. This boy was certainly more tempting than the last two people to be auctioned: poor little Dennis Creevey who had received no bids at all, and in the end had to be auctioned off with his brother Colin, both of whom were bought by Justin Finch-Fletchley, who had a wicked gleam in his eye and a huge roll of gaffer tape. Olive did not want to know what he had planned for those two. Well, maybe just a little…
No, this boy was much better; she definitely preferred her men to look a little less manic, and preferably not shaking with what could be either excitement or a desperate need to use the bathroom. And it seemed that Ernie was much more in demand than the Creevey brothers: the bidding was really quite frantic, especially from the Hufflepuff section. Olive supposed that Hufflepuff solidarity probably had something to do with it, but Susan Bones seemed far too eager for her own good. Well, she certainly wouldn’t let her win; a sweet little thing like her surely wouldn’t know what to do with such a fine specimen, pompous-looking though he might be, with his shiny prefect badge and stern side-parting. He looked the type to wear very sensible underpants.
Olive couldn’t wait to find out.
