I'm going to admit something and it's going to be very hard for me to say it. But I think I owe it to people to be honest and forthright about it. *takes a deep breath*
I really liked a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. The movie is
JCVD. I don't like it because it's a good action movie or a good martial arts movie. It is neither. I like it because, uh, well . . . Jean-Claude Van Damme gave a great performance.
There! I said it! I was absolutely stunned at a performance by Jean-Claude Van Damme. Because of who he is and the movies he's made in the past, and no doubt will continue to make in the future, no one is going to see this movie. The people who see Jean-Claude Van Damme movies won't like it because it's not a vapid head-punching blood drenched martial arts movie. The two or three other people who will see it . . . I don't think they'll be able to successfully parse the subtlety of Van Damme's performance. I feel a little ridiculous saying that. The subtlety of Van Damme's performance.
But it's true! It's true! Van Damme's performance is great acting! He conveys emotional complexity, maturity and depth, pain and loss, a dry humor, a sense of the absurd and real human courage - not the fake stuff he does in all his other movies.
So, all of this is messin' with my head. It's not something I'm prepared to deal with but a couple of days later I find myself still chewing over his performance in the movie. I had to out and say it. I think that Jean-Claude Van Damme gave a really good performance in JCVD.
