In the Line of Duty
“You mean like in Moby Dick?” I asked as we settled down for the night. “Now that is one long depressin’ book.”
“Moby what?” My eyes flew open, soon as I heard the blast echoing down the hallway of the jail house. I smiled over at Kara who was already off of her bunk and crouched near the door. “Think it’s your crew?”
“More n’ likely.” With a shrug I took the scant steps it took to get to the cell door. Pressing my face between the bars I tried to see down around the corner to see if it was Zoë and Jayne. “Can’t really see Zoë leavin’ me here for more than a day, it’s our line of duty to rescue each other and such, has been since the war.”
“Yeah,” she said, as she tried to take her own peek. “Just one big question for you Mal. What if that isn’t your people out there?”
“Well that would be bad,” I agreed as I started looking around the cell for something to use as a weapon in case we needed it. “And there are considerable folk who would like a piece of yours truly that I’d just as soon avoid at all cost.”
She laughed at me then. It was a full on belly rolling laugh as she pushed me with one hand to get me out of the way. “That would be my luck to be in jail with someone who’s wanted by the Alliance.”
“Darlin’, if that was the Alliance, they’d just come down and take me. No, if that ain’t Zoë.” I tried to clear my throat that had gone very dry at the thought of it being some other enemy of me and mine. “We are well and truly humped.”
The pale green lights that dotted the ceiling of the cellblock blinked a few times before going out completely. Grabbing the end of my bunk, I yanked it as hard as I could from the wall, hoping that I could break off a leg or brace or just something I could use. Kara started kicking the crap out of it, her heavy boots making short work of the bolts and rusted piece of metal.
“It ain’t much,” I said as Kara balanced the piece of metal in her hands. My hands itched. I wanted my gun. Hated to hell that one of those bastards had my weapon. “But it is better n’ nothing.”
“Mal!” Jayne’s bellow echoed down the hall. “You in here?”
Kara grinned and dropped the makeshift weapon. “Guess that means it is your crew.”
“Well it’s Jayne anyway.” I kicked the chunk of bed back over to her. ‘Y’all might want to keep a hold of that. He can be a might unpredictable.”
“You mean he might sell you out?” She narrowed her dark eyes as she watched Jayne come stomping down the way towards us.
“It has been known to happen,” I told her with a shrug. “But last time I threatened to show him how to swim in the Black. But you keep that in case we can’t get out of here the easy way.”
“Mal!” Jayne fumbled with the guard’s control pad and after more than a few fat fingered attempts got the door of the cell to pop open.
“Where’s Zoë, Jayne?” I asked as Kara and I darted out of the cell. Not that we were in any hurry mind you.
“She’s back there with River.” Jayne handed me a gun. It wasn’t mine, but it would do. “Who’s the girl?”
“Her name’s Kara. She’s comin’ with us.” I took the lead then, following the sounds of destruction, knowing that where it was the loudest would be where I’d find my people. “And we’ll be breaking atmo soon as I get my pistol back. I ain’t leavin’ this pisshole without it.”
