well, it's not bad news, anyway!
Dear Meredith Rawls,
Your application to the Master's Degree program in Astronomy at San Diego State University (SDSU) is complete and has been reviewed by the Astronomy Department.
The deadline for applications is May 1, and we will receive many applications between now and then. Although we may offer early admissions to a very small number of applicants, we do not make our final offers until early May. This year we have received a record number of applications, far in excess of the numbers in previous years. And the quality of the applications is likewise very high, including your own.
Your application is strong, and as of today it ranks in the top quarter of our applicants. Thus we have put you very near the top of our waiting list. While we cannot say for sure how many students on the waiting list we will ultimately accept, it is quite likely that those near the top will be offered admissions in May or sooner.
I realize that this decision does not provide you anything concrete, but we do want to let you know where things stand right now.
Sincerely,
[the Graduate Student Advisor]
