COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS TEASER!

Jul 26, 2007 17:32

Well, Countdown, the current weekly DC series has started off rocky, in my opinion, but at least we now know what it is counting down to...

At SDCC, it was announced that at issue #26, the title will change to "Countdown to Final Crisis", and fans were given this image to ponder...

The Challengers from Beyond (the misfits of the multiverse, if you will) facing off with their predecessors... Kyle Rayner, Donna Troy and Jason Todd vs. Hal Jordan, Wonder Woman and Batman.

Their elders are considered the greats of their day (and even the modern day).  Yet, the three "misfits" in the multiverse, who all have some vital difference from their forerunners, aren't exactly easy work.

Whatever lack-of-plan Paul Dini seems to have with Countdown so far is starting to gel a bit more.  Lord knows if he can pull it off.

PSYCHED! Except for this...

This was teased earlier in the week.  Fairly ominous, no?  The selection of characters is conspicuous.  The "Big Three" of the DCU were likely to be there, but the warning of death is unsettling for Batman especially, what with Jason Todd running around and editors looking for a place for him, Dick Grayson becoming a cornerstone of the DCU, and Bats' test-tube-Al-Ghul son Damian out to kill him (and Bruce's death at his hands foretold in Batman #666).

Wonder Woman doesn't feel safe either.

Hal's died before and so has Superman, but then again there ARE 4 earth Green Lanterns still flying around.  Is it time for some pruning?

Which Flash that is is questionable... is that Barry Allen back from the dead (or out of the Legion lightning rod?), is that recently-deceased Bart Allen, showing how the death toll of the Final Crisis has already started, or is Wally going to bite the bullet for real this time?

Hawkman's got the worst prognosis, if this poster means anything.  The only bonafide, non-debatable second-tier character on the one-sheet, the DCU can easily replace him, what with the character's backstory and his non-deal-breaker status for a majority of fans.  DC LOVES to kill or reinvent second- and third-tier characters (The Giffen league, anyone).  The question remains... even if his death is imminent, why the hell is he on the poster?  He's the one that's not like the others...

Oh, and let's not forget the vortex and the lightning... especially the lightning...

Any takers?  (Anyone understand a word I just said?)
