"I'm thinking about cashing in my savings and just going to finish up school." I suggested it at the dinner table, just to bounce the idea off my mother. She has been the most steadfast supporter of my education since my youth, just as a mother should be. However, my statement caught her off guard.
She set down her fork, "God, don't do that. Get out of Omaha. You hate it here and there is no reason for you to stay. You can go to college where ever you end up. There are colleges everywhere. You saved that money to get out, so do it. There won't be a lot of these opportunities." She said it with a conviction that made me realize how obvious I'd made it to the people around me. How clear my distaste for Omaha really was.
Thing is, I don't hate Omaha. I actually really like Omaha. Its comfortable. I hate being comfortable. Something about it makes me uneasy. As if being comfortable is giving up.
I suppose all I'm saying is I am on the verge of doing something very impulsive and I hope all of you will be supportive of it. I know this won't happen. The trend seems to be everyone says supportive cliches to the face of the person leaving and then once they're gone, talk about how they have abandoned all their friends, are selfish and then strangely these 'friends' openly wish failure on the people who are trying their best to break the cycle which everyone else has fallen victim. It happened when Erin left, it happened when Alan left and countless others. Its happened ever since everyone went off to college. I don't expect the bitter and petty to change. I just hope those I call my friends will be supportive.
On a completely unrelated note: Anyone want to come with me to Lawrence on September 26th to see the Weakerthans at the Bottleneck? Let me know.
