Been a busy week. Last night Beka and i went out to the Barebones (a local theater company) Halloween show, a take off on the epic of the Golden Fleece, at Hidden Falls park. It was fun, the production was characteristically a little rough, involved lots of people playing with fire (the whole show concept was just an excuse really), and a live orchestra that was really quite good.
Tonight i went to a screening of I'm Not There, a film exploring the facets of Bob Dylan. I number of actors play Dylan including Cate Blanchett(!), who does an amazingly good job at suspending disbelief and inhabiting an aspect of Dylan's character. Greil Marcus the author of Lipstick Traces (definitely worth reading) and other books discussed the movie afterward, although this was somewhat disappointing due to limitations the format and and quality of audience questions. One good takeaway quotation: "Ambient Research." Could be a new tag line for urban exploration.
One aspect of Dylan's character that didn't seem to make much of an appearance is one that i recently heard in a lecture by of all people, Nick Cave. Cave was talking about the love song as an expression of terrible longing and emptiness. Of artists who really seemed to best express this he used Dylan as an example. Another interesting avenue of analysis perhaps.
In other news, i now have a new, obscenely powerful computer. :-))
