Satanism and Crime: A Survey

NOTE: I really should refrain from attempting to write anything intelligent when I'm this tired, however, I insist:If you're reading this and you don't know anything--or you know very little--about Satanism, then I'd like you to please take a survey about Satanism and crime and how they are commonly--albeit falsely--linked by the general public. According to my dictionary:

Satanism - worship of Satan, often using distorted forms of Christian worship

Satanism and crime is not necessarily wrongly linked by the general public, because most people subscribe to the dictionary for commonly accepted meanings of words.

The "University of Internet" redefines Satanism by referring to the philosophies of such people as Anton LaVey and Michael Aquino. By these types of definitions, I am a Satanist of the Setian variety.

However, redefining and expanding terms and definitions is one of my pet peeves for the reasons highlighted by this type of survey. Meaning and understanding are lost in the redefinition.

There are people unindoctrinated by the internet and special interest groups who call themselves Satanists, sacrifice animals, commit crimes and contribute to statistics linking Satanism and crime.

Precisely, which is the focal point of the Web site and accompanying essay. "Satanism" was redefined in 1966 when LaVey founded the Church of Satan. Are you saying this is something that triggers your "pet peeves"?

Also, what is this "University of Internet"? I've never heard of it before.

Some people accepted LaVey's redefinition of Satanism - relatively few. He didn't change the view of society in general as to the meaning of the term.

Yes, trying to change the meaning of language terms is a pet peeve of mine, but it happens all the time. And LaVey's attempt is less bothersome to me because so few are even familiar with his name, let alone the philosophy that he called Satanism.

The University of Internet is a term I made up awhile back, actually when discussing Satanism. The internet has an educational system all its own. I never heard of LaVey, Aquino or Satanism as a legitimate philosophy until I got the internet. In day to day life, I would not tell an acquaintance that I am a Satanist, because I know exactly what that means to most anyone I am likely to encounter - including strangers.
