Not only is it "widespread" in Maryland, there was a teenager (as in not yet college aged teen) who died because of it in my county recently. The e-mail I got from the school today was the second I've seen telling people to get the shots, and referring to the teen to get people moving. In my county, you can still get the shot free (through the county Health Department... chances are that you can get them cheap somewhere, if not free.
I think I'm *very* glad that I fall into the "get the shot or get yelled at a lot" category... which also throws my family into the same category... which means I did get us all vaccinated a few months back.
