character name: Lavi
canon & medium:
D.Gray-Man | mango
age & species: 18 or so BUT PROBABLY MORE LIKE 19 or 20 | human
appearance:
isn't he gojesu anyway. Lavi is of unknown origin race-wise, standing around 5'10" or so with a long, lean physique. He has longish (longer than pictured) messy dark red hair, and blue-green eyes-- or eye rather, because he only has one! He wears an eyepatch over his right eye for unknown reasons, with single ear piercings and usually wears a silver hoop in each ear. He's pretty boyish-looking and wears a customized Exorcist's uniform, recently updated and shown in the picture!
previous rpg memories: N/A
timeline: During the Phantom Thief G arc, pre-chapter 187
background/history link: The first fun thing about Lavi is that his name actually isn't Lavi. In fact, he's had 49 names that aren't his name at all! Welcome to the world of Bookman, where you cast aside your name like dirty socks for the cause. Lavi was taken in by Bookman when he was six years old and began learning martial arts and first aid skills, and that's about all we know. When he was seven, he was shot by a stray bullet and on the brink of death, and apparently clung to Bookman's hair the entire time he was unconscious, and when he was nine, he grew taller than Bookman himself. He traveled the world with him, taking different aliases and personalities all for the sake of recording the world's hidden history. That's right, they're like the black market equivalent of historians. And unfortunately much of Lavi's background is obscured and unknown. We saw a small glimpse of his child-self in the recent Ark arc, where he saves Lavi from the brink of death caught inside of one of Road's traps, but outside of that, all we see is from shortly before he joined the Black Order, so let's start there and work our way up!
Before joining the order, Lavi went by the name "Deak", and his original personality was... very, very different from how he is now. He was incredibly jaded with the world, having witnessed countless wars, treason, and what he considered true human nature. Humans were cruel, they were stupid, and they cared only about themselves. In a way, he considered himself above them as he observed everything with unclouded eyes, putting every last detail into the titanium library that is his memory. The Order seemed no different, after he found out he was compatible with Innocence when he was sixteen, and became an Exorcist. (And was almost sliced in half by Kanda, as well, if Lenalee hadn't saved him.) It was just a way in to observe what needed to be recorded, but people were dying in droves for a cause that seemed stupid yet again. But "Lavi" was an upbeat, carefree, laid-back kind of person, and so he acted as such.
He started to change after he saw Lenalee mourning the exorcists that had passed away, but he really changed after he met Allen in the Rewinding Town arc, and showed him how hard it was for normal Exorcists to fight the Akuma. Allen's open-ended love for everyone, his self-sacrificing nature, his explicit compassion for Akuma souls, and the way he smiles through everything really began to rub off on Lavi. He began to forge forbidden bonds of friendship with the Exorcists around him, breaking the rules for all Bookmen to never have emotional attachment to the history you're recording.
He first appears in the series at the end of the Rewinding Town arc, keeping an eye on Allen. He and Bookman are introduced, and he goes outside with Allen and schools him about how hard it is to be an Exorcist. You always have to assume that even someone you met the day before is an enemy today. Anyone that approaches you is an Akuma and you have to be ready to kill them without batting a lash. That's what they're uniforms were meant to be; targets. Allen had an ace up his sleeve that none of the other exorcists do, but now that it was damaged, he had to learn to live like the rest of the Exorcists. Then they faito some akuma and go for a ride on Lavi's magic carpet hammer and crash through the hospital. 8);;;
He joins Allen on his next accidental mission after the boy was abducted by some crazy townsfolk at a train station, and Lavi went back to find him on his hammer. This was where they met with and fought Crowley, an Innocence-wielder that all the townsfolk thought was a vampire, and Allen's eye LEVELED UP!! to the point where the people around him can see the Akuma's souls as well, and then Lavi met one smokin' hot Akuma and professed his undying love to some man-eating flowers. We see Lavi's cool fire tricks with his hammer which turns out to not just be a futuristic taxi, and he gets some cool moments while fighting Crowley. They finally convince Crowley that he's an exorcist instead of a vampire and that he's been hunting akuma, then the hot chick dies by his hand, and they go back on home to Headquarters happily ever after.
The next part of their adventure is to find General Cross, and it somehow takes them to...
...China. And they find a lead with the Mistress of a brothel! ...Though she's actually a supporter of the Black Order, and prepares them a ship to take then to Edo, Japan, where there are no geisha to be seen, nor samurai to wield blades of justice and honor, but plenty of akuma up the ass. However, before they departed, there's a Disturbance in the Akuma Force and it seems that one of the Exorcists was giving information to Tyki in exchange for saving his life, which made his Innocence go berserk and turned him into a Fallen One. Allen and Lenalee headed off to find out what the problem was, and fought to try and save Suman. Allen saved the little girl and was absorbed into Suman's body, so that he could remove and possibly destroy the berserk Innocence, but it didn't work and Suman died anyway. Tyki finds Suman and Allen, and destroys Allen's Innocence, leaving him to die. Lavi and Lenalee go to look for Allen, and find Timcanpi being chased by Akuma. They defeat all of the Akuma and have Tim lead them to where he left Allen, but they find nothing but bloodstains, since the Guardian from the Asia Branch of the Black Order found his body and took him back.
The two get a message from Bookman and head back to the ship, where a messenger from the Asia Branch is waiting. He tells them that they have Allen Walker, but they have to set sail immediately and leave Allen in their care. Lavi convinces Lenalee to leave Allen with them, telling her that she saw Tim's memory as well; Allen's Innocence was destroyed and he can no longer walk on the path of an Exorcist. This is where they meet Miranda again, who joins their team and repairs the damaged ship with her time reversal Innocence... and proceeded to jump in the ocean to drown herself, thinking they didn't want the ship repaired at all and Lavi had to save her. ): They also get sexy new uniforms, too! ...And then Lavi smashes a window because Lenalee's sulking and gets angry, telling her there was nothing they could have done. ...And proceeds to get schooled by the panda for getting emotional and acting like an Exorcist. So we see some change in our boy Lavi!
So the ship sets sail for Edo, but they get stuck in a sticky situation with a Level 3 when it attacked Lavi, who was on the deck at the time, and then a horde of Akuma above the clouds. They fought the good fight and eventually defeated the Level 3 after Lenalee sustained heavy damage, but was saved by her crystallized Innocence, and departed the damaged ship on a smaller boat with the converted Akuma Chomesuke (dubbed so by Lavi), leaving behind the dead crew members, Anita, and Mahoja. We see another glimpse of Lavi's compassion as he left the ship and Miranda's protective barrier to find Lenalee, sustaining full damage he'd taken before just to find her.
They arrive in Japan safely, or at least as safe as possible, until Chomesuke receives a transmission from the Earl and the Exorcists follow her to him, instantly attacking. Lavi goes for Tyki, set on getting revenge for what Tyki did to Allen, but the Earl interrupts by setting loose a giant Akuma, which the Exorcists all have to band together to try and defeat; luckily enough, they're saved by Tiedoll and his group, Kanda and Marie. They get sucked into the Ark by the Earl, and another showdown goes down until Allen appears to SAVE THE DAY!! and the Earl and co. retreat, for a short while. Everyone sets up camp under a bridge and there's a touching reunion between Lenalee and Allen JUST IN TIME FOR HER TO GET ABDUCTED and sucked through a pentacle oh no. D: So everyone grabs one another and a big chain of Exorcists end up in the Ark itself once more. Lenalee, Allen, Lavi, Kanda, Crowley, and Chaoji... and Lero, the Earl's talking umbrella thing.
Tyki meets them shortly after entering and gives them a key, and the Exorcists are slowly split up as they progress. First Kanda enters a room to fight the Noah Skin Boric, and they moved on without him. Next was the room with Devit and Jasdero, where Crowley fought after Lavi used his amazing memory to sift through thousands of replica keys to find the original, and they left Crowley behind as well. Next was the banquet hall with Rhode and Tyki, where they proceeded to battoru and Lavi was caught in Rhode's trap, his current self forced to battle his past self, which took over his body while he was caught in his own mind, facing his old ways of thinking-- everyone's just ink on a page, there's no such thing as "friends" for a Bookman, etc etc boring things. Allen fought Tyki and exorcized his Noah, while Lavi broke free by defeating Rhode inside of the world he was caught in, and then engulfed himself in flame to break the trance.
Happy things and rainbows come next after Tyki's Noah went berserk and revived itself, and Lavi fell down a huge hole while trying to fight him. He extended his Innocence, but when Allen took hold to try and save him, it crumbled in his hand, until Cross intervened and told Allen he was the 14th's vessel and he had the powers of the musician, and Allen saved the day by restoring the Ark and all his friends. They were then able to use the doorways to get back home and were victorious...
...Until Lulubell, the Noah, infiltrated HQ and Lavi was sent to the infirmary to take care of Lenalee, and a Level 4 quickly followed Lulubell's appearance and attacked headquarters. Lavi followed Lenalee down to Hevlaska under the pretense of "recording" what happened, and eventually met up with Kanda. With their Innocence still in shatters, the two did their best to help, but it was once again Allen that saved the day, alongside all of the Generals who were able to take down the yet-unheard-of Level 4. Lavi doesn't make too much of an appearance after that; he observes Allen and Cross' meeting about being the Musician as he's dressed in a cloak, hidden along with Bookman. Shortly after, when Cross goes missing, Lavi's shown discussing it quietly with Bookman, trying to see what it was that Bookman was startled by, but Bookman refuses to tell him. He doesn't join in the new mission two months later with Allen, Link, Marie, and Kanda to investigate Phantom Thief G, who's actually a new Innocence wielder.
His personality has slowly molded to "Lavi", and he even states once that he wasn't sure if the smile he wears is truly a fake one anymore. He's learned the importance of friends, and even puts himself in harm's way to protect them, even so far as to get in between Allen and Tyki when the Noah in Tyki went berserk just to spare his friend a few more moments to recuperate.
AND FINALLY. While everyone was off on their little adventure with Phantom Thief G, Lavi and Bookman are being lazy hanging around Headquarters doing who-knows-what. \o_O/ From then on, after the Third Exorcists appear and go off on some new adventure with Allen in Jordan (chapter 187 oh how I love you for finally coming out), Lavi is with Bookman in Whan Shan, China when everyone gets attacked by Noah all over the world! He does finally have his Innocence back though, hopefully bigger and better than before.
personality: First of all, Lavi is a Bookman! This means a number of things, but most importantly, it means most of your life is a fabricated lie. Depending on what the next assignment is, you're to prepare a character/personality appropriate to the situation. In other words, you have to make yourself into someone that'll have the most advantages so you can get the information you need quickly and easily. We never see any of Lavi's past "personalities" except for his child self when he's caught in Road's dream world. We catch a glimpse of him as "Deak" but he isn't acting the personality and is instead his usual jaded self. "Lavi" is a cheerful, playful young man with a penchant for pranks so that way he can warm up to the other Exorcists and his superiors quickly and get any necessary information by getting close to the right people. You hardly ever see his Bookman side, because his duty is to uphold the chosen characteristics until the job is completed. There's a few snippets here and there with his analytical behavior and secretive ways, as well as his penchant for learning and reading, but that's really about it.

abilities:
- Inborn: Lavi has honed his amazing memory to the point of remembering every book he's ever read, scenery, landscapes, maps, even the feel of an old key to the accuracy of picking it out of millions of copies. He can read quickly and retain all of the information accurately, and he's also pretty damn good at acting. He remarks once that it'd be easier/faster for him to pick out one key from millions if he could use both eyes, so that could hint at hidden power or just that he lost an eye somehow, so who knows!
- Innocence: His Innocence is the equipment-type, synchronized with a small hammer that he wears in a holster around his right thigh. It grows with a particular incantation, "Oodzuchi, Kodzuchi, man, man, man!" -- "Big hammer, Little hammer, grow, grow, grow!" And it also has "Shin!" -- "Extend!"
Though its maximum size isn't known, it's been seen at about the size of a two-story building, and can be extremely heavy. Besides swinging it around, Lavi can invoke a ring of seals around the hammer head, which shows different kanji, all elementally-themed. There's also multiple question marks, which show that he hasn't completely mastered his Innocence. It's also been shown that he can combine them, piling one seal on top of another. Known attacks listed below!
- Maruhi, Goukakaijin: Fire Seal, Conflageration of Ash | A large serpent of fire that crashes down on the enemy and leaves a burning "fire" kanji on the ground about 20ft in diameter
- Maruten, Raitei Kaiten: Heaven Seal, Thundering Lighting Whirling in the Skies | Generic lightning attack GET!
- Marumoku, Tenchi Pankai: Roots Entwining Heaven and Earth | Controls nature and the weather, such as summoning up a tornado, or parting clouds-- he usually forgets this one ):
- COMBO!! Maruhi & Maruten: Gouraiten, Strong Thunder of the Heavens | A large iron serpent with a weird mixture of fire and lightning attacks idek

sample journal entry: There sure are a lotta people here, aren't there? It makes you wonder.
How'd everyone get here? What kinda place did you come from? Which country? Why do we all speak the same language? Almost makes you wonder if there's some sorta pattern, doesn't it? There's all sorts of people here, but there must've been a reason to bring who was brought, no matter how plain or powerless they seem to be.
There were people living here before everyone came, right? But the question is really if they've always been here or they're travellers themselves from other wheres and whens, or even the offspring of previous travellers. Will everyone get home? Would anyone decide to stay here instead of returning to their home?
I won't let an ounce of info slip past these ears. Can't say I'm really complaining about having something interesting to do, either. It was getting too boring around headquarters. If they want me to organize one more section of records and re-write any more lost reports, I might be the one telling Gramps it's time to go...
third-person sample: N/A because I'm an oldie.
