First round, Ava only kills one person, a firestarter from California named Chris. He kills Todd and Melissa, though, so in terms of body count, he’s the winner.
But neither of them kill Jeremy.
Ava’s not really sure what kills Jeremy. She thinks it’s a demon. It looks like a little girl until it doesn’t, and it advances on her after it finishes ripping Jeremy to shreds.
She screams at it to stop, puts everything she can behind it, and amazingly, it obeys.
They all sleep in what she thinks is the hotel, and they all dream about the same thing: a yellow-eyed man.
“Rules are pretty basic,” he explains. “Kill or be killed, and the winner gets a prize.”
Chris takes the talk to heart, and Ava wakes to the sound of screaming and the smell of burning flesh. She doesn’t know why Chris decides to leave her for last, but as she feels her body heat up, she wishes that the demon had gotten him instead of Jeremy. It’s a powerful wish, and next thing she knows, the demon’s there.
For a second, it’s awfully funny as Chris tries to set the thing on fire.
She vomits when it’s all over. It doesn’t make her feel better.

“I won,” she tells Yellow Eyes that night. “So it’s over.”
He smiles. “Not quite.”
“Please,” begs Ava. “Let me go home. I want to go home.”
“Ah-ah-ah,” he says gently. “There’s still round two.”
***
Ava wakes up in the schoolroom. There’s silence outside, and all the bodies are gone.
She spends the next couple days with just the demon girl, and spends most of her time keeping the thing away. Her head hurts, but at least she isn’t gutted.
Sam’s alive, she tells herself. Just because she dreamt something, doesn’t mean it came true. She sees possibilities, not actualities. Sam’s alive, and he’s had enough time to realize she’s missing. He’s with his brother and Brady. They’re all looking for her.
They’ll find her. She’s sure of it.
***
She wakes up one day- always in a different place from where she fell asleep- to the sound of voices.
There’s a fresh batch of kids.
She convinces them to try to escape, just walk away, find a road and hitch-hike back to a normal life. Most of them are scared; all of them are freaked. So it’s pretty easy to take charge. They spend two hours walking through the woods and wind up back in the town.
One of the girls starts crying.
***
Ava dreams of the yellow-eyed man. He doesn’t say much, just, “Second verse, same as the first.”
***
The next morning, she can tell by everyone’s faces that they also dreamt about him.
She hides in the church and waits for the others to kill themselves off. The demon doesn’t bother her, and she wonders if that has something to do with the church being sacred ground.
When the victor comes- a girl this time, Natalie- she sounds smug.
“You might as well as give up now,” crows Natalie. “I’ve already killed the others.”
Ava sighs. The metal cross mounted on the back wall goes hurtling through the air.
There’s a lot more blood than she expected, and then she passes out.
***
“Very impressive,” says Yellow Eyes, stepping around Natalie’s body. “And very devious. Playing them against each other like that.”
“I didn’t play them against each other,” protests Ava. “That was you. I just…”
He smirks. “Just reaped the benefits of my labors. Like I said, devious.” He pauses to admire the cross sticking out of Natalie’s chest. “I must say, I love the symbolism.”

It all begins to blur together after that. Ava’s too experienced; none of the others ever stand a chance.
She becomes very good at lying. Acting round-eyed and innocent, even as she picks them off one by one.
Mind control doesn’t work on most of them, but it works on a few- the really weak willed. It’s kinda fun to pick those ones out, make them off themselves. There’s also telekinesis and firestarting. Once, she even manages to kill a guy by electrocuting him. Ten thousand volts straight to the chest, and he drops to the ground, smoking.
Mainly though, she likes to use the demon. It makes her feel less culpable. The demon’s going to kill someone anyway; Ava just decides who.
She gets better. She gets a lot better. Her mind feels clear, feels sharp, feels like it’s on fire.

Yellow-Eyes congratulates her every time.
“I have to admit,” he says, after she finishes off the latest ship of fools. “I wasn’t expecting this kind of hustle from you. Who knew that underneath that sweet demeanor lay the cold and calculating heart of a killer?”
“Fuck you,” says Ava bitterly.
He clucks his tongue. “Now is that any way to treat the guy who’s gonna make all your dreams come true?”
“Because I always dreamed of being a murderer,” she replies tartly. “My mother must be so proud.”
“It’s just the two of us here,” says Yellow Eyes, smiling. “You can admit that you kind of enjoy it. Gives you a rush, doesn’t it?”
Ava doesn’t answer, and he continues to talk.
“But it’ll all be over soon, and then we can commence with stage two of my plan. Bet you’re looking forward to that.”
Ava perks her head up. “What do you mean soon?” she asks warily, keeping the hope out of her voice.
Yellow Eyes taps her on the nose. “I mean one more, and then we crown you queen.”
***
She wakes up in a shed. One more time, she tells herself, trying to jimmy open the door. It won’t budge.
She screams.
A few minutes later, the door opens, and she rushes out and straight into the arms of Sam Winchester.
He’s five months too late.
-End.
