1638 words. I think I posted this on a fic meme once, but never got around to finishing it and/or posting it here. uh, this was written so long ago that geng was still part of SJM, if that tells you anything. it's still only 'finished' in the loosest sense of the word. oh, and it may involve genderswap. that should be a warning, huh?

Kyuhyun and the Ten Thousand Year Old Spring of Traumatized Girl
The bloodcurdling shriek that rings through Super Junior M's Beijing apartment bright and early one morning has a couple of immediate effects.

One, Ryeowook drops a cup in the kitchen, sending shards of porcelain and puddles of coffee all over the floor and startling Henry out of a doze at the table.

Secondly, Siwon falls off of Geng's bed in shock and comes up wide-eyed and wielding a shoe. It's not the first time Zhou Mi has spotted a bug at ungodly hours, after all, and it never hurts to be prepared.

Geng groans, and makes a half-hearted effort to fasten his jeans, one-handed, as he follows Siwon toward Zhou Mi and Kyuhyun's room and mutters under his breath. "If it is not bigger than his head, I'm going to put a scorpion in his bag tomorrow."

When they reach the room in question, they are somewhat surprised to find the door shut and some hushed, furious whispering coming from within, rather than the door open and Zhou Mi standing on top of the highest available furniture, wringing his hands.

Siwon raises his brows, in puzzlement, and lowers the shoe. Geng just sighs and raps twice on the door before trying the knob. It's locked. "Zhou Mi? Kyuhyun-ah, what's going on?"

"Nothing!" Kyuhyun yells from inside, sounding irritated and kind of strangled.

There are some sounds of a struggle from behind the door, and a moment later, Zhou Mi unlocks it and flings it open. "Girl!" he says, looking panicked.

Donghae chooses that moment to lean into the hallway, curiously. "What? Where?" Everyone looks expectantly at Zhou Mi, but he just whimpers.

"Shut the door!" Kyuhyun sounds no healthier than before, and it's enough to make Geng push past Zhou Mi with a frown. Kyuhyun is huddled on his bed with all of the sheets drawn up to his chin, and it takes Geng a moment to realize something's not quite right about his face--chin a little narrower, mouth a little softer, and fingers somehow smaller than they should be, where they clutch the sheets.

With a sinking feeling in his gut, Geng looks from Kyuhyun to the door, then quietly steers Donghae, Ryeowook, Henry, and a protesting Siwon back out into the hallway, shutting it in their faces. "Show me," he says, and Zhou Mi hides his face in his hands.

Kyuhyun shoots him a sour look, then slowly drops the sheet. He's wearing a familiar old t-shirt, but it is fitting him in all the wrong places, due to an unexpected pair of breasts straining the material.

When Geng exits the room ten minutes later, jaw set in a grim line, he ignores the looks (ranging from wounded to expectant) that the others give him, and locks himself in his own bedroom with the phone.

Eeteuk fails to offer any helpful advice on what to do when someone you're responsible for spontaneously turns into a girl, and Geng sort of really regrets calling Seoul right around the time Heechul steals the phone away and spends five minutes doing nothing but laughing himself to tears and demanding picture evidence.

Meanwhile, Zhou Mi is trapped in the room with Kyuhyun-the-girl again, and Kyuhyun makes a really pissy noise every time he even looks longingly at the door and thinks of escape.

"If I'm stuck in here, so are you," Kyuhyun informs him in a tone that brooks no contradictions. "This is probably your fault, anyway."

"How is it my fault?!" Zhou Mi wails, then ducks a stuffed bear that is flying at his head.

"This sort of thing would never happen back home!"

"Ya, Kyungah. Did he fall in a cursed spring?" Heechul collects himself enough to ask, then shrieks with laughter again.

Geng hangs up.

He regrets that, too, when he immediately hears the tell-tale beeps of at least three phones receiving texts in the hallway, like clockwork.

"Impotent son of a rabbit," he says, where Heechul can't hear him.

- - -

"But how is that my fault?" Zhou Mi whines, curled up at the very head of his bed with his giant Hello Kitty in his arms. It might be the safest place in the room, with an angry (and female) Kyuhyun pacing back and forth in front of the locked door.

"Do you think I'd even be in China if it weren't for you?!" Kyuhyun falters, dark eyes widening as she realizes her own words have betrayed her.

It's too late, and Zhou Mi is staring at her with a rapt expression perhaps best described as sparkling.

"...Oh, god, don't do that." She turns her back on the older man, resolutely ignoring his besotted look. "You look like Niqiu. Quit it. It's like you want a doggy biscuit or something."

Zhou Mi is already off the bed and advancing, arms outstretched, until Kyuhyun finds herself folded into a clinging hug. While Zhou Mi has always been tall, she's not used to finding her nose barely at the level of his collarbones, or feeling quite so dwarfed. It's an odd sensation, and she grips at the front of his shirt for a moment, torn between pushing him away and leaning closer.

She sighs a little, finally, and lets her head rest against his shoulder because it's much easier than thinking about waking up as a girl, or what to do about it. His hand rubs along her back, long-fingered and warm through the thin material of the t-shirt, and she exhales a breath that is shakier than she cares to admit.

When Kyuhyun is finally persuaded to leave the bedroom and sit down for some breakfast, Geng decides that the first order of business may be acquiring some useful articles of clothing for him. Her. Things like this just don't happen to nice, normal people who don't know Heechul, he reflects, and kicks Donghae (gently yet firmly) in the shin when his food falls off his chopsticks for the third time in five minutes because he's too busy staring at Kyuhyun's chest to eat.

Henry has a baseball cap pulled down so far over his eyes he can't possibly see anything, which Geng is starting to think is an excellent tactic. Ryeowook hasn't stopped fussing nervously over the stove yet, and Siwon just looks sort of shell-shocked, but at least he hasn't suggested praying about it.

In the end, Geng calls Eeteuk again, who hands the phone off to Sungmin, who calls Sunny, who calls Geng back, then demands to talk to Kyuhyun and spends forty-five minutes on the phone with her locked in the bathroom with a measuring tape pilfered from one of the coordis before Kyuhyun re-emerges, grimfaced and bearing a set of measurements.

"I can't go into a store and ask for that!" Henry protests, looking terrified.

Geng gives up on Western progressiveness and calls his mother.

- - -

"Poor dear," Mama Han says, clucking over Kyuhyun in Chinese and handing off a couple of stuffed shopping bags to Zhou Mi as she surveys her ill-fitting shirt and glowering expression. "Let's get you dressed.

If it were anyone else, Zhou Mi is fairly sure that Kyuhyun would be putting up a fight, but absolutely none of them will counter Geng's mama, and thus the door shuts with a click and he sits down to wait outside, while the others find a thousand other things to pretend to be urgently busy with.

It's all very surreal to him, really. After all, he's the one who woke up with his hand on Kyuhyun's soft, distinctly un-masculine breast.

When Kyuhyun comes out, Zhou Mi doesn't have the first idea how to react. For one thing, she is wearing a skirt, which is not something he has ever pictured Kyuhyun doing or has ever had any desire to picture Kyuhyun doing. Somehow, her hips look very curved and feminine under the sway of the knee-length fabric. For another, she is wearing a shirt that fits, and he can't help but notice the edge of a bra-strap just peeking out where it crosses the line of her collarbone. Most importantly, perhaps, he has an enormous weakness for the way Kyuhyun's eyes go all smoky and dark when he's angry, and another enormous weakness for the way his mouth twists just a little when he's upset and trying to hide it. Softened, blurred lines aside, this girl is still Kyuhyun, smoky-eyed and with the corner of her mouth twisted down.

He kind of wants to wrap her in his arms and kiss the twist away, but he's not sure he can ignore everything below the neck to do it.

"Hi," he says, inanely. Mama Han looks amused and disappears around the corner, presumably to find her son.

Kyuhyun just glares at him and shoves him halfheartedly in the chest. "What?" She curls her lip slightly, and wraps her arms around herself. "Don't act like you've never seen me before. I'm not a different person."

Zhou Mi frowns, stricken, and pulls her into a tight hug. "Kuixian, it's going to be okay." He doesn't know how or when, but somehow it will be.

She breathes shakily into his neck, head tucked under his chin in a way she doesn't fit when she's a he. "I can't go anywhere like this."

"We couldn't really go anywhere, anyway," he points out, hoping it will help Kyuhyun feel a little less pessimistic about it all, insofar as anyone can be optimistic when they've suddenly and inexplicably changed gender.

"Just shut up," Kyuhyun growls, in a much higher register than usual. "I'm going to stay inside and play videogames all day, and tomorrow when I wake up, this nightmare will be over."

Zhou Mi considers his logic, then (sagely) acquits with a nod.
