Here is a shot I took last Monday night at the High Dive in the Fremont district of Seattle. "Aleili & The Veils of the Nile" Dance Troupe was giving a belly-dancing performance. The flashless photos at ISO 1600 actually turned out much better than I thought they would. I had assumed that they would be almost useless due to the noise...

The light should be much better for our outdoor show at the Festival at Mt. Si this Saturday. I'll bet the other dancers there will be happy to do some posing, and there will be a lot of interesting people and settings to shoot throughout the fest. I haven't been to it before, but reading the web site, it sounds like quite the slice of Americana--well suited to the area where "Twin Peaks" was filmed. Hope to see ya there!
(Btw, we're usually billed as The Veils of the Nile, or Aleili and The Veils of the Nile.)

Thanks for the reminder re "Aleili & The Veils of the Nile" as opposed to just "The Aleili Dance Troupe". I had it right the last time I posted shots of the troupe. Oh well, I corrected it in the post above.
Now if I could just master low-light nightclub photography ;)

Thanks! (I'll keep the PI job in mind ;)
I shot these at f/2.8. I could use a faster lens (say a 50mm f/1.4) to get less motion blur, but then the depth of field would suffer. Maybe the best solution is to shoot in fill-flash mode with a gel filter on the flash to compliment the colored stage lights. This would brighten the scene without washing it out with a harsh white light, which alters the mood significantly.

Even to a person who hasn't seen very many belly-dance performances, Aleili does seem to have a great stage presence. (This was pointed out to me by marta_s (one of the long-time troupe members).
