OK, I admit it's hard to make a word that short sound dramatic, but it's time for another Physics is Phun show at U-MD. Our topic this time: The Atom. We're doing things with atomic* spectra, fluoresence and phosphoresence, and the photoelectic effect, among other things. Basically, we're bouncing photons off electrons and watching what happens.
The official details are
here, but the basics: we're doing a public lecture and demonstrations presentation, repeating for three evenings. It's an entry-level introduction to the topic, for general audiences.
The program runs Thursday, January 10th; Friday, January 11th; and Saturday, January 12th, at 7PM each night (same show each night, no surprises (so long as nothing breaks ((which I'm hoping it won't this time (can you tell I like nested parentheses?)))).
We're also hunting for a few volunteers to help out with some hands-on demonstrations before the show. If you're interested in lending a few hours of your life to Science! (cue thunderclap), we need volunteers to come at 6 each evening to eat pizza & get trained on one of the pre-show demonstration gadgets, then show it off to the audience as they come in and get seated. (Yes, it would be nice if we had something besides the usual pizza for once, but my blandishments thus far have been for nought.)
If you're interested in volunteering, sign up with the office (per the instructions linked above) to let us know you're coming, so we order enough pizza. We'd love to have you, and it really doesn't take a special technical background, just a curiosity about how the world works and a willingness to tell other people about it.
*Note: atomic physics is not the same as nuclear physics, which is the one with the reactors and radioactivity and such; we're saving that for a different show.
So, if you're interested, and have an evening to dispose, consider coming by!
