I'm a firm believer in the you-treat-I-treat mentality. If you want to front the bill, then thank you and I'll get the next one. It's nice, and it doesn't make either party feel bad. If some one opens the door for me, or offers to help me carry my bags, that's them being nice and polite, not sexist. I offer too. It's just good manners.

But on the flip side, there are some things that go a little far; one of the teachers at my school drives me home after scuba and feels the need to get out of the car and watch me go inside, then call me like, two minutes later to ask if I'm in my apartment yet. That makes me feel like I'm unable to walk around/get into my house without him checking on me. THAT is degrading and it pisses me off like no other.

yeah, that's kind of creepy... but again, he's probably just doing what he's been taught is polite/expected of him.

Yeah, and he's also epically older so probably also thinks of be as a baby. Might also be because I live alone but SERIOUSLY. I GO HOME AT LIKE, 4 AM ALONE. I CAN DO IT AT 9 O'CLOCK AS WELL.

*butts in*

i don't know if it's degrading, but there are guys who have waited at my gate as i walked down the long path to my apartment front door and got in and i always found it weird. 8D; but i guess it's with my best interest at heart, so i try not to mind. i guess since i live in berkeley, that also makes more sense.

A long path, I can understand. Hell, everyone I know at home in Canada when I get dropped off at home, they don't drive off until I've gotten in the house (but I'm notorious for leaving my keys), and boyfriends walk me to the door (but that's for the kissing). But I'm talking about the distance of a meter to my door. And I live in a rather small building, so it literally takes me less than 30 seconds to get into my apartment due to the elevator always being on the ground floor and having a keypad lock. In total it takes me about 50 seconds to a minute to go from the car to in my house, door locked. Then a phone call asking if I'm in my apartment yet. That I find degrading, because I feel it's saying I can't be left alone for literally less than a minute.

I go home alone at 4 am. I can get out of a car at 9 alone too.

xD lol when i say a long path, i don't mean like... a woodland path. i mean like, a breezeway/hallway that leads directly from my front gate to my front door. there is no possible way anyone is going to jump from the shadows to surprise me that i wouldn't have seen already. it's also not really that long - it probably takes less than 30 seconds for me to walk from the gate to the front door.

8D they probably don't want you coming home at 4 am alone
