An X on your hand is a symbol for being Striaghtedge. It is this way because clubs usualy put an X on anyone under 21 so they no not to sell them drinks. So people started putting it on themselves because they are saying, hey I dont drink and am proud of it.

Emo kids like stars...a lot...for no reason.

So when a "edge" kid drinks or does drugs and breaks his promise, he covers up his X's with stars because its convientent. And now he fits in with emo kids.
