Stupid computers...
Back in Jan my sister somehow infected my computer with a virus. I managed to get rid of it, however, it apparently went to town on various common .dll files (among other things). About 1/2 my installed programs stopped working, including my AVG (paid firewall included version). I reinstalled the AVG, and appear to be virus-free but am currently unable to reinstall Office or my printer, making my computer essentially useless. Useless to the point where I actually just went online and priced new computers. Luckily I have this lovely old desktop here to work on in the meantime!! My only possible hope is that it's actually my Office CD that's damaged (it's scratched) and not my computer...
So. My questions to you:
Any suggestions as to how to repair the damage myself, without knowing the name of the virus (since I lost it when I reinstalled AVG)?
Anyone have a copy of Office?
Any suggestions of who I could take it to for data backup and repair if I can't do it myself? It didn't come with an OS originally, and I really don't feel like going through the hassle of having an "off the record" OS or learning a new one... so reformatting really isn't an option.
Thoughts on the Dell Latitude series?
Thoughts on desktop vs. laptop (other than the obvious mobility issue!)?
Thoughts on Vista? I've heard nothing but bad news about it...
Thoughts on... umm.... Macs? I know I said I don't want to learn a new OS, but... I've heard lots of GOOD things about Macs...
