Summary: Four guys live in University housing their senior year. Fights, girlfriend drama, people's senior projects and the realization that it's a big world out there... or something.
I flicked on the living room light in my new apartment. It seemed like no one was home. It was just as well, because I was exhausted.
I made sure to lock the door behind me as I settled in. The apartment was simple and functional. I needed to relax for a second, so I sat down on the vinyl couch. It wasn't very comfortable, but I knew it was made to last. Even though this whole complex was brand new and designed to feel like a luxury living situation, it was still University housing.
Still, it was much nicer than the dorms I'd lived in for the last three years. I'd tried living in one of the unfurnished apartments on campus last year, but I didn't want to bother buying and selling all the furniture on Craig's List. I ended up sleeping on a cot all year. That was fun.
The only reason I ended up with an actual bed this year was pure luck. I saw a post on the cafeteria bulletin board, looking for roommates to go in for a suite at University Commons. I think I was the first guy who called. It would be four people in one house, which was fine by me. My little brother Matthew can be a real jerk and all my old roommates were too at some point or another.
I pulled out my phone, trying to figure out my schedule for the semester. Of course my Design course would be the most important. I looked over the syllabus for a few minutes. I knew I would have to come up with a great project idea and soon, but I didn't stop to brainstorm. I would have time for that later. My other classes were Career Skills (easy), Persuasion and Professional Writing for my Communications minor (easy), and a Directing elective (interesting).
I knew I wouldn't have much free time, between classes, work and acting. I also needed to work out and work on my project in CityScape. That was my main hobby, even if I didn't have much time for it. You should see the Designs people come up with, by hacking the game and even messing with the code. I don't have that kind of time. I just like to build.
I was still on my phone when I heard someone come into the room. "Hello?" He asked.
"You forgot to turn the light on." I said, without looking up from my phone.
"What's your name?" He ignored my comment, but I didn't care.
"John," I said flatly.
"Oh, the game designer. I'm Brian."
I realized I was probably being rude, but honestly, I didn't want to get too involved with my roommates. They don't need to know everything about my life. I barely remembered Brian was a Management major, so he probably got my drift by now. I might as well get this over with.
I finally looked up to greet him. Brian was holding a white cane and slowly making his way to the kitchen, almost counting his steps. Well, I had just been a complete jerk to a blind guy. I win at life.
