Summary: Billy and Jane are ready for the zombie invasion.
Billy sat out on the porch with the shotgun. We thought we were prepared. I read something once that we were the top candidates to survive. Billy was a veteran, we were both in good shape, and we loved paintball. “You see anything?” I would shout out at him occasionally.
“No, but I heard they were coming. Could be anytime now.”
I wasn’t afraid. We had enough provisions to last over a month. I wasn’t scared of roughing it. If anyone could make it through, it was Billy and I. “I’m coming out,” I declared and grabbed the axe off the wall.
“Be careful, Jane,” Billy barely looked up at me as I came out onto the porch.
“I’m not scared. Just aim for their heads. I heard that’s the only thing that kills them.” We were prepared.
Billy nodded and looked out at the deserted street. Slowly, we saw the mob come into view. It was worse than I expected. They moved slowly and they were covered with blood and open sores. They didn’t have their arms out in front of them like you see in the movies, but the sight of real, live zombies was terrifying. Billy shook his head. “Don’t go after them unless you don’t have any other choice. And remember we have the fallout shelter. Run for cover if it gets really bad.”
I just nodded. I knew all this already. I just stared out at the mob. I couldn’t believe the living dead were really here. I knew they were looking for fresh meat, but I would do anything to avoid being taken. I was prepared for the day the dead came back to life.
