Summary: The NY gang make the mistake of going to Times Sq on New Year's Eve and make some resolutions.
Santana was shivering. She kept rubbing her hands together and blowing into her fists. She clutched her thin jacket close to her chest, trying to get warm. Looking up at her, I almost felt bad for her. “Are you OK?”
She shifted her weight from one high heel to the other and sighed. “I just need to sit down. Hey, maybe I can sit on your lap?”
“Absolutely not.” Usually I wouldn’t mind, but there were crowds of people all around and of course I couldn’t see anything. We’d been out here for way too long. I was getting cranky myself. “I’m sorry. I just-”
“Never mind,” she snapped.
I couldn’t think about it for too long because Sam looked at his watch and said, “Hey guys, it’s almost midnight!”
Sure enough, a loud countdown started. I tried to look up towards the New Year’s ball, but I couldn’t see anything. I just shook my head and counted down with the rest of the crowd. This would have been so much better from the comfort of our living room, but it was definitely an experience. There were all types of people out in Times Square tonight.
When we got down to three, two, one, we all shouted, “Happy New Year!”
We all smiled and froze, not sure what to do next. After a moment, we all leaned in for a group hug. Sam pulled back first and tried to ask a question. It was so loud that we couldn’t hear anything. I shook my head and tried to lead us away from the crowd, but there was no going anywhere.
It took hours to get back to Rachel’s apartment. It had become our home base, even for those of us who didn’t actually live there. I doubted I was getting any sleep tonight. I yawned at the prospect. Sam looked around the room with sleepy eyes. “I was going to ask you guys, what’s your New Year’s resolution anyway?”
“Not go to Times Square on New Year’s Eve!” Santana burst out immediately.
Rachel frowned a little. “I kind of enjoyed it. Anyway, my resolution is to get cast in another Broadway show of course.”
I rolled my eyes, but I didn’t say anything. I didn’t know my resolution yet.
“Yeah, I want to sing on stage at a real concert.” Blaine had stars in his eyes, no matter what he was majoring in.
“I wouldn’t mind that either,” Kurt sighed.
“Of course I want to get a great modeling gig,” Sam said confidently.
“What about you, Artie?” Rachel looked at me. “You’re being awfully quiet.”
“I’m just tired,” I sighed. I couldn’t think too much. “I don’t know. I guess I just need to learn how to be patient. You know what they say on film sets? Hurry up and wait. I feel like that’s New York.” It was too quiet, I lost my train of thought.
It was OK, everyone was exhausted. Sam looked at me, half dreaming. “You’re right.”
