Summary: Lisa takes Brian for swimming lessons.

I frowned when I saw that Brian was the only kid left. He was standing in front of the bleachers, wrapped tightly in a towel, looking upset. The swim instructor was eyeing me, clearly unhappy as well. I shook my head. “I’m sorry I’m so late. What happened?”

Brian ran up to me. “I don’t like swimming lessons, Mom. Do I have to come back?”

I looked up at the swimming instructor. She just pulled her arms across her chest, showing no emotion. I pulled Brian close to me. “Were the kids mean to you?” I knew it could happen, but I had been expecting it sometime around middle school. Kindergarten seemed a little young for this kind of thing.

Brian just frowned.‘No, it wasn’t that. The lessons were so babyish. I already know these things.”

“It’s true,” the swim instructor pipped up. “This level is for very beginners, kids that are just starting or are scared. Brian is already a great swimmer. You should switch him to a more advanced level.”

I shook my head. “I just thought he might need a little more help, you know.”

Brian rose his head proudly. “I don’t! I’m better than all those kids. Mom, please, I don’t like this level.”

“OK. I’ll switch you.” I had to smile because this was just the first thing that Brian would actually be better at.
