Summary: Sebastian takes Marion off campus, to a new experience.

“Are you sure we’re going the right way?” Marion frowned, looking at the trail ahead. She had to watch every step, trying not to trip on the rocky earth.

“You really don’t trust me, do you?” Seb just laughed.

Marion shook her head. “It’s not that, it’s just that... I’m scared, OK? Are we really supposed to be this far away from campus?” She looked over her shoulder, unable to make out the sprawling grounds where they all lived and went to class. “I’ve never been this far away before. There’s a reason they keep that gate closed all the time.”

“Yeah, it’s so the people in town feel safe, it’s not for us. You know as well as I do that they never lock the gate. Anyway, we can always turn back if you want.”

Marion shook her head. She’d always been too determined to just give up without a fight. Besides, she had to admit she was a little curious as to where they were going. Seb had never said a word about it and suddenly, he was inviting her to his hidden retreat.

Not that she had any idea where they were going. It seemed he was taking her out of the way on purpose. One second they would be traveling on a gravel trail and the next they would be in the middle of the woods. At last, Sebastian settled on the well groomed trail and kept going at a nice clip. Marion actually had to jog to keep up with him.

“Slow down, will you?” She rolled her eyes.

“I’m not going that fast,” Seb shook his head, neglecting to look where he was going. He tripped on a fat rock stucking up in the middle of the road. He landed hard on his bad hand. He swore under his breath, but quickly caught himself, brushing himself off and standing up.

“Are you OK?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” but he seemed irritated. “Anyway, we’re almost there. See that bench up there?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s where we’re headed.”

They walked in silence until they reached a beat up wooden bench. “What did you want to show me here, of all places?”

“Shut up!” Seb blurted. He shook his head. “Sorry, just look around. Have you ever seen anything like it?”

Finally, Marion relaxed and looked out into the valley that surrounded their school and the small town where it was located. Of course she’d noticed that the valley was nice, but from out here, it was almost perfect. The green valley was dotted with houses, but mostly the dense forest was untamed. It was something she had never experienced before. She’d grown up in the city and out here, even the air felt different. She almost felt whole. Maybe all she needed was a fresh perspective.

She looked up at Sebastian with new eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t trust you.”

“Don’t worry about it.” He looked down at the raw earth that surrounded them. “Sometimes I lose my cool . I’m sorry about that.”

“It’s OK,” Marion said quietly, scared to ruin the calm.
